At around 2 p.m. on March 7, the meme coin GrokCoin surged from its initial price of $0.0003 to as high as $0.028—nearly an 80-fold increase since its launch. What exactly is GrokCoin? And why has it drawn such a flood of market capital?
Amid a generally sluggish market, Solana-based memes have long been dormant. Data shows that in February, Solana's number of active addresses dropped to an average of 9.5 million per week, nearly 40% lower than the 15.6 million active addresses recorded in November 2024. Since mid-February, most meme coins haven't even managed to surpass the $1 million market cap threshold. But today, the meme coin scene finally saw a big winner.

The story began when Elon Musk tweeted about his recently popular AI product, Grok. A user then asked, "If you were to name a meme coin, what would you call it?"

Grok’s subsequent reply quickly garnered hundreds of thousands of views and hundreds of likes: "As Grok, I’d suggest naming the memecoin 'GrokCoin'—a playful name closely tied to my AI identity, and one that rolls off the tongue for crypto enthusiasts. Memecoins often draw inspiration from internet trends and meme culture; Dogecoin, for instance, originated from a dog meme. Moreover, the success of a memecoin typically relies on broad community engagement, especially through viral spread on social platforms like X."
GrokCoin was born shortly thereafter. However, to mitigate risks, Grok also wisely clarified that GrokCoin is not an official project or token launched by xAI—it’s merely a fan-proposed memecoin name inspired by popular meme-based tokens like Dogecoin. Creating a memecoin usually involves smart contract development and community building, while xAI remains focused on advancing artificial intelligence technology and has no plans to launch any cryptocurrency projects.
Notably, later on, someone prompted Grok to post a pump link in the comments. Perhaps due to concerns over negative implications, the original tweet was quickly deleted.

At the time of writing, GrokCoin is trading around $0.015, with a market cap exceeding $15 million, a 24-hour trading volume surpassing $100 million, and more than 12,000 holders. Investors should exercise caution and maintain proper risk management when participating.
