Speed-reading the game L2 chain Ancient8 Chain: What makes it different?
A gaming-centric, community-driven Ethereum L2 powered by the OP Stack.

The gaming sector has remained quiet for quite some time. Since the last cycle’s phenomenon-level play-to-earn game Axie, no blockchain game has sparked widespread discussion. Meanwhile, market participants have realized that the “play-to-earn” model represented by Axie lacks sustainability. How to enhance gameplay while allowing players to earn money has long been a key topic explored by entrepreneurs and investors in the industry.
Southeast Asia once led the development of blockchain gaming, attracting significant venture capital investment. Ancient8, a blockchain gaming infrastructure platform recently listed on Coinbase, is one such example. As early as January 2022, Ancient8 raised $4 million in a seed round led by Dragonfly Capital, Pantera Capital, and Hashed. In June of the same year, it completed another $6 million funding round led by Makers Fund and C² Ventures, with participation from Pantera Capital, IOSG Ventures, Folius Ventures, Sky9 Capital, among others.
Few teams have maintained sufficient cash flow throughout the bear market and continued building consistently. Even fewer have endured the full cycle and only officially launched their token generation event (TGE) in this current cycle. What makes Ancient8 different?
What is Ancient8?
Ancient8 is a Vietnam-based blockchain gaming guild initially created to generate economic opportunities through blockchain games. However, since September of last year, its primary focus has shifted toward developing Ancient8 Chain—an Ethereum Layer 2 network—whose mainnet launched in February 2024. On July 17, its native token A8 officially began trading.
Ancient8 Chain is a gaming-centric, community-driven Ethereum L2 powered by OP Stack and enhanced by Celestia, specifically designed to address scalability and adoption challenges faced by Web3 games and consumer DApps. By prioritizing modularity, Ancient8 Chain reduces gas fees.
OP Stack’s modular components cover data availability (DA), sequencing, derivation, execution, and governance layers, offering fine-grained control over each aspect. Ancient8 integrates these modules to enhance composability and scalability. Fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), Ancient8 Chain allows developers to seamlessly port existing Ethereum projects.
Lower gas fees for on-chain interactions also provide users with a more friendly experience. Additionally, Ancient8 integrates Celestia to introduce modular design optimized for DA.
In short, Ancient8’s composability, scalability, and EVM compatibility greatly facilitate developer efforts to build applications on top of it.
Full Suite for Game Studios
Beyond its L2 technology foundation, Ancient8 offers project teams and players a comprehensive suite of technical and marketing services, including:
-
Doji – an NFT marketplace platform
-
Space3 – a game launchpad platform
-
Ancient8 Gaming – a gaming community hub
-
ReneVerse – an advertising service platform
-
A8ID – identity and social layer
Most Ethereum L2 projects offer only partial financial or technical support. Ancient8, however, provides end-to-end support covering listing, distribution, marketing, partnerships, and more—enabling rapid project incubation.
According to data from its official website explorer, Ancient8 now has nearly 1.5 million accounts and 1.724 million total addresses, with an average block time of 2 seconds. Active account numbers have steadily increased since mainnet launch, later fluctuating around 20,000.
Token Economics
A8 is Ancient8’s native governance token. Token holders can participate in voting and proposal submissions, capture value from network growth, pay for gas fees, and stake tokens. The Foundation Council plays a key role in promoting the adoption of Ancient8 Chain and its decentralized governance.
The total supply of A8 is 1 billion tokens, allocated as follows: 32% to ecosystem, 20% to team, 15% to treasury, 10% each to seed round and liquidity provision, 6% to private sale, 5% to public sale, and 2% to advisors.
Regarding vesting schedules: seed, team, advisor, and treasury allocations begin unlocking after a 12-month cliff; private sale unlocks after a 6-month cliff. Public sale, liquidity provision, and ecosystem funds are unlocked immediately.

Airdrop and Staking
A8 token claims are currently open until August 17 at 17:00, and eligible users include:
-
Hairy The Bene NFT holders
-
Zone Nine NFT holders
-
Participants in Ancient8 Testnet V1 and V2
-
Mainnet active users
-
Mainnet leaderboard users
Also included are various content creators, badge holders, ecosystem engineers, and others.
Users who complete the "claim and stake" action on the airdrop claim site before August 17 will receive a 400% points multiplier, and these staked tokens do not require locking.

Currently, Ancient8 offers two types of staking options for token holders: one is non-locking, allowing instant deposits and withdrawals. The other requires locking, with optional durations of 30, 60, or 180 days. The more tokens staked, the higher the points earned. Longer lock-up periods yield higher points multipliers.
