On Jonah Blake’s “Real Third Web Show,” Game Fund Partners, Alpha, and new Web3 games were discussed. Joining the conversation were Blake Finucane, Chief Strategy Officer at Pluto Digital; Ian Hambleton, host of Context Podcast from Boy Club Crypto; Maze Theory, CEO of Emergent Entertainment and founder of Powered by Ethos, Output, and Found; and Russ Harding, Chief Creative Officer at Emergent Entertainment.
See the notes below for more information.
PS VR2 Launch
Russ
-
There is disagreement among people about which VR games are truly powerful.
-
Forza Motorsport serves as a prototype for PS VR2 but is extremely difficult to play because driving is hard to implement in VR.
-
In early prototypes of PS VR, motion sickness and disorientation were common—like your head detaching from the camera.
Ian
-
The biggest issue with PS VR1 was its controllers.
-
Early VR experiences caused motion sickness due to insufficient power, frame rates, etc.
Jonah
-
PS VR2 is an evolving technology.
PlayStation Reinvests in VR
Ian
-
PlayStation has a strategic innovation component within its portfolio.
-
The pricing means not everyone can buy it immediately—it's aimed at players who want to be on the cutting edge of gaming.
-
Developing for VR requires completely different skills compared to developing for traditional game consoles.
-
They need a dedicated team to handle actual development.
Web3 in VR
Ian
-
Ian currently has no immediate plans to integrate Web3 with VR, but looks forward to future possibilities.
-
Web3 should exist across everything. It benefits all players.
Russ
-
New technology and what it brings to players is a shared point of fascination.
-
Ian believes both fields continue to innovate constantly.
-
What excites Russ most about Web3 is the community surrounding it.
Jonah
-
Jonah believes Twitch will also integrate Web3.
-
What Twitter lacks is a visual component.
-
Twitch and Twitter face the same problem—difficulty attracting audiences.
AAA in Web3 Games
Russ
-
Budget helps—it allows teams to create larger environments and assets.
-
What really matters is the team they assemble and the quality of that team.
Ian
-
In this context, the team’s vision and ambition are crucial.
-
Likewise, Ian wouldn’t be surprised if Resurgence’s budget didn’t exceed $15 million.
Release Plans and Roadmap
Ian
-
Yes, multiple returns are great, but in reality, Ian sees this as a reflection of massive engagement in the space.
-
How Web3 is integrated into Ian’s game is important—everyone wants to remove the friction of entering Web3, but at their core, they’re building amazing games.
-
Building community through showcases, product demos, and other offerings.
-
Ian has already launched ARGs (Alternative Reality Games).
Blake
-
Freezing is a staking mechanism.
-
It’s somewhat like playing using on-chain and off-chain reward perks and incentives.
-
The Gen Zero NFT is the most central and important NFT in the game.
-
Gen Zero is one of the key pillars of the Parallel ecosystem.
-
Blake has built an entire story world and previewed everything through ARGs.
-
Full-time writers ensure cohesion and provide background for all characters.
Russ
-
The whole purpose of Cryotag is to let the community tell stories.
-
What Russ has built allows people to participate in the journey.
-
It’s all about having a loyal community with a clear participation roadmap.
Monetizing the Game
Ian
-
The reason for using Cryotags and data frameworks is that they allow prices to influence them.
-
They earn revenue through trading.
-
Ian and his team will release more NFTs.
-
People will purchase NFTs as part of their regular gameplay, generating yield. In addition, there are markets and trading.
-
Currently, there are no near-term plans regarding tokens.
-
Ian primarily earns money through NFT sales in-game and via market transactions.
-
It is built in Unreal 5.
Vertical Slice Availability
Jonah
-
Building a massive multiplayer online game takes years.
Ian
-
Ian plans to launch a single-player demo close to a vertical slice this year.
-
Players will definitely see some gameplay this year, followed by further updates.
Q&A
Q: What are the next steps? Vertical slice or more content marketing?
Russ
Focus on the community and refer to the roadmap to keep them engaged.
Q: How much blockchain integration will you push?
Russ
-
The game itself is at the core of our promotion, but blockchain elements will bring significant value.
-
People can do many cool things on the blockchain beyond just ownership.
-
We want to experiment extensively within the game and explore innovative uses of blockchain.
Q: What do you think Web3 does traditionally that Web2 doesn't, and vice versa?
Russ
Bringing people in, building communities, and involving them is fundamentally different.
Ian
-
Some aspects are the same, others differ—and achieving the best of both worlds is crucial.
-
What makes Web3 unique is the alignment of interests between content creators, developers, players, and audiences. Shared ownership is what will make Web3 games shine.
Q: What does the Cryotag tier mean?
Russ
-
Tier is on-chain, meaning it changes with the NFT’s metadata.
-
Your metadata changes when you freeze for extended periods.
-
Long-term, access to different parts of the game will be unlocked.
-
Higher Cryotag tiers will grant heavier rewards.
-
Currently, higher Cryotag tiers during freezing yield more points.
-
These points can be used to purchase—or obtain "free"—different drops.
