EthCC Cannes Special Report: 10 Industry Trends Revealed at the Taiko-Based Rollup Summit
From the pre-confirmation mechanism to Booster Rollup, the cutting-edge practices championed by Taiko are shaping a truly scalable, deployable, and global future for Ethereum— and this is just the beginning.
As global developers gathered in Paris for EthCC 2025, Taiko—the first based rollup scaling solution on Ethereum—successfully hosted its second Based Rollup Summit in Cannes, France, in early July, continuing to drive exploration into Ethereum’s scalable future.
Key figures from the Ethereum ecosystem, including representatives from the Ethereum Foundation, Celo, SSV Network, and Boundless, came together to discuss core topics such as based rollup technology, preconfirmations, and the evolving Ethereum landscape.
Here are 10 key takeaways from the summit:
1. Preconfirmations are everywhere—even your coffee runs on them
Taiko Chief Operating Officer Joaquin Mendes opened the summit with a relatable analogy, emphasizing that preconfirmations are not a novel concept but a mechanism we use every day.
"Preconfirmations have always existed—they’re already at work when you buy a cup of coffee."
Mendes explained how preconfirmation works, how it enhances user experience on Taiko by making transactions faster and smoother, and laid the foundation for understanding its critical role in Ethereum scaling.
2. The future of ZK: Solve user needs, not just technical challenges
Boundless CEO Shiv Sankar shared his vision for zero-knowledge technology, stressing that what matters most isn’t technical competition, but delivering real value to users.
"The key is figuring out what users actually need—and then using ZK to fulfill those needs."
He pointed out that Web3’s main competitors aren't other blockchains, but traditional tech giants like Amazon. The real challenge lies in understanding user behavior and building products people are willing to pay for.
3. URC integration simplifies validator access to based services
SSV Network CEO Alon Muroch introduced the Universal Registry Contract (URC), explaining how SSV enables programmatic integration to lower entry barriers for validators joining based rollup services.
"Most transactions now happen on L2, not on Ethereum mainnet. This presents a massive opportunity for both validators and rollups."
SSV clients have integrated URC, allowing validators to register quickly and seamlessly—whether managing 10 or 10,000 nodes, the process remains smooth and efficient.
4. Why can't Ethereum simply shorten block times—and why preconfirmations matter?
Taiko CEO Daniel Wang addressed a common question: If the goal is faster user experience, why not reduce Ethereum's block time to 1–2 seconds?
"Taiko aims to reduce block latency from 12 seconds to under 2 seconds. But people ask: why doesn’t Ethereum do this itself?"
He noted that Ethereum currently has over one million validators. Achieving sub-second consensus would impose extreme hardware and synchronization demands, potentially compromising decentralization and accessibility. Therefore, based preconfirmation offers a more practical and Ethereum-aligned solution.
5. What defines "success" for based preconfirmations?
Several speakers proposed key metrics for measuring the success of based preconfirmations:
For example, live based rollups integrating preconfirmations with L1 proposers, and at least 20% of staked ETH participating in the system.
Declining transaction fees and improved user experience were also highlighted as essential signals of viability.
6. Building the future for enterprises and privacy
Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Tomasz K. Stanczak emphasized that mainstream adoption requires focusing on enterprise use cases and privacy protection.
"We're not building products directly for end users. Most will access blockchain through Web2 platforms—but the underlying layer must be genuinely trustworthy."
He believes enabling enterprise participation and fostering compliant collaborations are crucial pathways to global market adoption.
7. Ethereum’s story needs better storytelling
Celo CEO Marek Olszewski posed a thought-provoking question:
"Are we attracting the wrong crowd?"
He argued that to appeal to institutional investors and everyday users, Ethereum needs a clearer, more compelling narrative—not just as a "smart contract platform," but as an asset ecosystem that delivers tangible returns and unique value.
8. Horizontal scaling is the only future for Ethereum
Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake clearly stated that vertical scaling for Ethereum has reached its limits—horizontal expansion is now inevitable.
"We must scale horizontally. There’s no alternative. Even one extra second won’t suffice."
He believes solutions like shared sequencing and cheaper SNARK verification will allow rollups to settle in every available gap, helping Ethereum move beyond its "adolescent" phase.
9. Booster Rollup: A new paradigm for scaling
Taiko co-founder and CTO Brecht Devos introduced the concept of Booster Rollup, highlighting how it differs from traditional approaches.
"Most contracts are deployed on L1, but each rollup connects directly to the main chain."
This means L1 contracts can be directly invoked from L2, enabling automatic scalability without sacrificing composability.
10. True scalability means internet-grade usability
In the closing session, Avail business lead Kyle Rojas, OpenZeppelin’s Gastuvo, and Luban co-founder Harry Gao discussed a fundamental question: What are we really scaling for?
"Can we truly scale to internet levels? Can we deliver the kind of seamless experience users expect today?"
They agreed that real blockchain scalability isn't just about increasing TPS—it's about building a globally accessible system that upholds decentralization, censorship resistance, and security.
Final Thoughts
Beyond technical insights, Taiko’s Based Rollup event featured interactive experiences, allowing attendees to try blockchain-based games built on Taiko technology—showcasing the fun and vibrancy behind blockchain innovation.
From preconfirmations to Booster Rollups, the cutting-edge work driven by Taiko is shaping a truly scalable, practical, and globally viable future for Ethereum—and this is just the beginning.
