Running Solidity Code on zk-Rollups: Why zkEVM Is Gaining Attention?
Token prices may have bull and bear markets, but science and technology only move forward.

This is an article explaining zkEVM:
- What it is?
- Comparison between zk-rollups and other types of rollups
- The competitive landscape among zk-rollup founders
And who actually launched zkEVM first.

L2 rollups batch user transactions to make gas costs cheaper while inheriting most of Ethereum's security guarantees.
There are two main types: Optimistic Rollups and zk-Rollups.
Optimistic Rollups like Optimism and Arbitrum periodically send state updates to the mainnet, relying on fraud proofs to ensure state validity. zk-Rollups such as Loopring and Starkware also send state updates to the mainnet but include cryptographic validity proofs.

Generally speaking, zk-Rollups are preferred for their stronger privacy guarantees, but they are technically challenging. Developers must write custom "circuits" using esoteric programming languages, where even minor functional changes require massive modifications to the underlying logic.

This is the problem faced by zk-Rollups like Loopring and Starkware—though theoretically powerful, they're too complex for most developers to build on.
So what if you could run arbitrary Solidity code on a zk-Rollup? That’s exactly what a zkEVM is.
Today, Polygon announced its first zkEVM. On the 19th, Scroll announced their zkEVM Pre-alpha test version. Back in December last year, zkSync launched their live testnet—they might actually be the first zkEVM.
Loopring runs a zk-Rollup, but it is not a zkEVM. It's specifically designed for handling particular activities such as token transfers and DEX trades.

Like Loopring, Starkware requires developers to use Cairo instead of Solidity when writing custom code.

Regardless of who is truly the "first," one thing is clear—zkEVM is finally here! This is incredible news, and competition among multiple high-quality teams will only accelerate technological innovation.
What does this mean for non-technical users, or for us? It means cheaper gas fees, more rollup options, and more applications built on top... Token prices may have bull and bear markets, but science and technology only move forward.
