ConsenSys has launched Linea, a developer-friendly zkEVM that developers can easily access via MetaMask. This marks a significant milestone for Ethereum, and below, Declan Fox, Product Lead for ConsenSys zkEVM and Linea, walks us through the key features of Linea.
Linea is a zkEVM powered by ConsenSys.
Linea proves *unchanged* EVM bytecode while maintaining standard Solidity compilers and Ethereum JSON-RPC interfaces. This means zero switching costs for developers already building on centralized or non-scalable EVM chains. For new builders looking to get started, it also means no platform lock-in. Developers no longer need to maintain custom code or rely on proprietary tools just to reach their users and remain *stuck* on a given platform—they’ll have the freedom to choose where to build and migrate if desired.
But does EVM equivalence come at the cost of performance?
No. The ConsenSys zkEVM leverages lattice-based proofs with recursion to deliver unmatched proving performance. Previous benchmarks have demonstrated the ability to process 30 million gas within 4.5 minutes, with a clear roadmap this year to achieve 5–10x performance improvements.
What you're getting is the result of four years of rigorous R&D from a team that helped drive Ethereum’s Merge.
Through close collaboration with the award-winning Gnark framework, Linea will soon achieve 100% EVM coverage, including all precompiles, enabling scalable trustless execution.
Yet, Linea’s true magic goes beyond technology. Linea will serve as a gateway for developers and users entering Web3.
Starting today, the Linea testnet will be listed as a default network within the MetaMask browser extension, seamlessly introducing millions of users to L2 and Ethereum without them even realizing it.
As a secure and trusted entry point into crypto, Linea—the Latin word for "line"—is the thread connecting Ethereum’s past and present, its current state with its full potential and future.
A future where UX and scalability are no longer adoption bottlenecks.
