According to a recent report from MV Global, Decentralized Science (DeSci) is poised for significant growth in 2025, driven by utility-focused memecoins.
DeSci involves integrating blockchain technology into scientific research. Its goal is to transform traditional scientific ecosystems by enhancing transparency, decentralization, and collaboration.
The report emphasizes that while the concept isn't new, the focus and scope of these initiatives have evolved.
Initially, most projects centered on funding research through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs). Notable examples include VitaDAO, HairDAO, and AxonDAO, which remain influential in the DeSci space.
However, the field has undergone substantial evolution and become more diverse.
The report highlights around 30 active projects covering various use cases such as research funding, health data management, and open-source research programs.
This diversification, the report notes, reflects the growing maturity and adaptability of the DeSci ecosystem.
DeSci aims to build a more inclusive and equitable scientific ecosystem, enabling researchers and communities to collaborate and innovate without constraints from centralized institutions.
The report identifies a 2024 trend: the emergence of DeSci-specific memecoins.
While most projects have seen limited success, two—Rifampicin and Urolithin A—have gained notable traction, reaching market caps of approximately $73 million and $59 million respectively.

These tokens were launched via the Pump.Science platform and, according to MV Global's assessment, offer far greater utility than traditional memecoins.
The tokens are directly tied to scientific experiments, representing specific compounds or interventions being tested on organisms such as worms, flies, and mice.
They serve as funding mechanisms for research, provide real-time updates on experimental progress, and enable trading based on research outcomes.
Holders of these tokens can even sell the rights to successful interventions, creating a tangible link between token ownership and real-world scientific advancement.
MV Global expects Pump.Science to scale significantly in 2025, with at least 10 projects projected to surpass $100 million in market cap by year-end.
MV Global also forecasts substantial growth in health data management and open collaboration for research in 2025.
Projects like Hippocrat and ResearchCoin show strong potential—Hippocrat empowers individuals to control their own health data, while ResearchCoin aims to create a "GitHub for scientific research."
Both projects are expected to reach a minimum market valuation of $200 million by 2025.
The report further predicts a surge in DeSci projects, with at least 50 expected to launch by the end of 2025. This growth reflects positive market sentiment and increasing liquidity within the sector.
