Are you passionate, confident, and dream-driven about Web3?
On July 14, the inaugural "Global Web3 Eco Innovation Summit · Singapore" (GWEI 2022 - Global Web3 Eco Innovation Summit - Singapore) concluded at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore.
The summit was co-organized by Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), its Inclusive FinTech Node (SUSS NiFT), and “DeFi之道”, a new international brand launched by 8BTC.
OKX, a leading global builder of the Web3 ecosystem, served as the title sponsor.
On July 14, nearly 80 industry thought leaders from Singapore’s financial regulatory bodies, universities, investment institutions, financial firms, exchanges, NFTs, GameFi, DAOs, and other Web3 sectors took the stage to share insights.
More than 1,000 participants from at least 11 countries and regions around the world attended the event. Over 70,000 people globally tuned in via livestream. At least 20+ Chinese media outlets and 20+ international media covered GWEI 2022-Singapore with articles and breaking news reports.

Beyond individual perspectives, GWEI 2022-Singapore also served as a window into the current state of global Web3 development. Here are some observations we’ve gathered—offering a glimpse that may enrich your understanding of Web3.
The Web3 Industry is Booming! Practitioners Are Full of Passion!
GWEI 2022-Singapore was the first major offline Web3-focused summit held in Singapore since the outbreak of the pandemic. Prior to the event, the organizing committee sent out approximately 500 invitations worldwide and received over 1,800 applications to attend.
Yet attendance far exceeded expectations. Nearly 400 people attended the welcome dinner the night before the summit, making seats hard to come by. On the day of the summit, over 1,000 guests arrived at Marina Bay Sands Expo & Convention Centre. Staff had to add 100 extra chairs beyond the original 800 set up across two venues.
More than one speaker remarked: This was the largest and most vibrant blockchain event in Singapore since the pandemic—a truly massive networking hub.
Attendees weren’t just Web3 enthusiasts but also included prominent figures from the internet industry. One speaker commented: The Web3 industry is even hotter than I imagined, and practitioners are incredibly passionate—everywhere you look, people are chatting, having dinners. Are you all natural social butterflies?

Web3 Is a Global Movement! But the Chinese Community Isn't Intimidated
Held in Singapore—a key node in global finance—many well-known Web3 companies have established offices or operational hubs here. As such, GWEI 2022-Singapore was inherently destined to be a globalized Web3 summit.
Among over 1,800 registration forms received, applicants came from cities including Hong Kong, Taipei, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Sydney, Mumbai, Montreal, Berkeley, London, and Rotterdam—representing more than ten global locations.
English is the common language among global Web3 practitioners, yet at this summit, Chinese was clearly an “official language” too—not only because Chinese is widely spoken in Singapore, but also because many Web3 professionals from Chinese-speaking regions have gathered here. Some Chinese-speaking attendees expressed deep emotions: joy and sorrow intertwined, all because of Web3.
Perhaps even more importantly: GWEI 2022-Singapore was the world's first industry summit giving equal weight to both Chinese and English. There is simply no other summit brand bridging the Western and Chinese Web3 communities quite like it.
As a newly launched international brand under 8BTC’s globalization initiative, “DeFi之道” will continue leveraging GWEI 2022-Singapore to promote cultural exchange between East and West in the Web3 space, enabling more Chinese entrepreneurs to speak to the world.
Cross-Domain Dialogue, Consensus Reached: Web3 Is the Future
GWEI 2022-Singapore invited leading projects across various Web3 sectors to share insights, including Ethereum Foundation, OKX, Huobi Global, DFINITY, YGG SEA, Nansen, Avalanche, Dapper Labs, The Sandbox, Consensys, HashKey Capital, ICG Singapore, and others—all highly recognized names in the Web3 space.
Numerous traditional enterprises also joined, such as Deloitte, Sygnum Bank, and Huawei Cloud. Additionally, senior executives from top-tier tech giants—including Meta, YouTube, JPMorgan Chase, Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Netflix—were among the registrants, which was truly surprising.
Moreover, Sopnendu Mohanty, Chief Fintech Officer at the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS); Tansaya Kunaratskul, Senior Expert in Corporate Strategy at the Bank of Thailand; and Cheong Hee Kiat, President of SUSS, shared their insightful views on Web3 during the summit.
Many attendees remarked that this was the most prestigious and authoritative Web3 summit they had ever participated in, offering the best expert interpretations of Web3’s future trends. Particularly encouraging was the active participation and dialogue from regulators, giving them great hope for the industry’s future.
This may reflect a broader trend: Web3 is not marginal. Instead, regulators, internet giants, and others are all actively seeking entry points to embrace Web3.
Singapore, a Core Node in the Web3 World
Though small in size, Singapore has adopted an open attitude toward financial and technological innovation, actively promoting industry growth. This openness and engagement were vividly demonstrated at GWEI 2022-Singapore.
At the summit, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and the Global FinTech Institute (GFI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the "SME Financial Empowerment (SFE)" program, aiming to provide basic digital financial literacy training for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Additionally, "DeFi之道" jointly released the "Global Web3 Ecosystem Innovation Observation Report" with SUSS’ Inclusive FinTech Node. Co-created using a DAO model, the report covers core Web3 sectors including infrastructure, DeFi, NFTs, GameFi, DAOs, metaverse, and regulation. It serves as an authoritative and essential guide for the public to quickly understand the Web3 ecosystem and its significance.
With GWEI 2022-Singapore now concluded, Singapore is set to host numerous blockchain events between July and September. Attendees believe this summit ignited public enthusiasm in Singapore, further solidifying the city-state’s role as a core node in the Web3 landscape.
Above is a brief summary and four key observations from GWEI 2022-Singapore.
Qu Zhaoxiang, partner at 8BTC, said that as a new media brand launched for its global expansion, “DeFi之道” stands rooted in the East, committed to building a high-end platform for disseminating ideas and fostering collaboration in the Web3 era—helping more people seize new opportunities in venture investment during the Web3 revolution. GWEI 2022-Singapore is not an end, but a beginning. From this higher starting point, “DeFi之道” will move forward together to welcome the arrival of the metaverse era driven by Web3.
The future is rushing toward us. When the next edition of GWEI 2022-Singapore begins in 2023, where will you be?
