Morpho Launches Fixed-Rate Product Midnight: Borrowers and Lenders Set Their Own Rates, Ending the Era of Interest Rate Models
Midnight allows lenders and borrowers to quote directly, setting their own interest rates and terms, no longer acting as price takers.

TechFlow Editor's Note: On-chain lending has reached a scale of $60 billion, but compared to the annual credit volume of $200 trillion in traditional finance, it remains a mere fraction. Morpho believes the bottleneck lies in the lack of fixed interest rates and maturities—institutions want certainty, not passive floating rates given by algorithmic rate models. Midnight allows both lenders and borrowers to quote directly, setting their own interest rates and terms, no longer being price takers.
The Time for Fixed Rates Has Come
When blockchain computation and transaction costs were high and participants were relatively passive, floating rate lending made sense. But today both premises have changed: blockchains are cheap and fast, and those entering the on-chain credit market—especially institutions and enterprises—have clear demands.
They want predictability: knowing what return or cost a position will bring, and for how long. They also want to control all parameters of the loan, not just some. Morpho Blue already allows users to control risk, but both sides of the market are still price takers, with interest rates set by rate models. Blue gave participants risk control, while Midnight gives them control over both risk and interest rates simultaneously.
Why It Wasn't Done Before
Many have tried to bring fixed-rate lending on-chain. Apart from timing being too early, most failed to scale for two reasons.
First, most attempts built fixed rates on top of floating rate pools. This doesn't work: predictability cannot be built on something that changes continuously. Second, quote-based fixed-rate lending only works when enough participants actively quote on both sides of the market, and early attempts encountered difficulties in this regard.
Midnight avoids both points. It is an independent primitive, with fixed rates at the core layer, and it doesn't start from zero—it inherits Morpho Blue's existing ecosystem: one of the largest active participant bases in DeFi.
Built for Every Type of Participant
Midnight offers different value to different participants:
Institutions gain predictable term structures, comprehensive control over interest rates, risk, maturities, and market-level compliance, enabling them to enter long-duration positions and build more customized use cases.
Fintech companies can offer predictable fixed-rate and multi-collateral credit products, customized according to user needs, without building a credit engine from scratch.
Lenders and borrowers gain predictability and efficiency: fixed rates during the loan term, ability to quote across multiple markets, use multiple assets as collateral, and earn yield or borrow at floating rates before Midnight orders are filled.
Curators have a new way to differentiate. Blue allows curators to configure risk; Midnight allows them to configure both risk and interest rates simultaneously, while duration becomes a new dimension for curation.
One Network, Two Market Structures
Morpho Midnight is not Morpho Blue's "V2", nor is it a replacement. The Morpho network will now be built around two market structures to adapt to different needs: floating rates and open terms when flexibility is important; fixed rates and fixed terms when predictability is important. The two are complementary rather than competitive: funds can earn yield on Blue while quoting on Midnight, and liquidity on one side helps the other grow.
Launch Plan
The phased launch aims to prioritize safety and give participants time to adapt to the new dimensions brought by Midnight.
At launch, only core contracts supporting direct lending will be available. Auto-roll, callbacks, and vault allocation are upcoming smart contract features that will enhance Midnight's usability, but will be launched gradually rather than all on day one.
At application launch, it will be limited to one network (Base), one trading pair (cbBTC/USDC), and limited maturity options. This allows fixed and floating rate dynamics to develop in parallel within a familiar market, before gradually expanding to more markets and networks.
