AI Era: When the "Human-Dog Gap" Shrinks to the "Human-Human Gap"
The smarter AI becomes, the smaller the role of humans, and the smaller the differences between people.
By: 0xTodd
I didn't expect my last post would spark such discussion. Actually, we're essentially talking about the same thing—just with slightly different numerical interpretations.
You've probably heard this saying: sometimes the difference between people is greater than that between a person and a dog. But this statement was made before the current wave of AI.
Today, I'll try to quantify this idea. The numbers are purely made up—just for fun—so don't take them too seriously.
Assume a primary school student has a cognitive score of 10, a PhD graduate 60, a university professor 75, and Einstein 100.
There's indeed a huge gap between 10 and 100—a full 10x difference. Saying it's like the difference between a human and a dog isn't wrong.
But by 2025, AI in terms of cognition is worth at least 40 points. Considering AI is a generalist while PhDs and professors are usually specialists, AI's actual value should at least double—to 80 points.
Then we have:
- Primary student + AI = 90 points
- PhD + AI = 140 points
- Professor + AI = 155 points
- Einstein + AI = 180 points
With AI, the absolute gap between a primary student and Einstein remains 90 points, but the relative gap shrinks from 10x to just 2x.
This is my point: AI is narrowing the gap between humans.
Some might object: Wait, a primary student surely can't utilize AI as effectively as a professor.
Like in One Piece, characters develop Devil Fruits differently. With the same rubber fruit, Gear 1 Luffy definitely can't beat Gear 4 Luffy years later (beginner vs expert).
Fair point. Suppose AI is worth 80 points:
- A non-user (someone who occasionally asks a question) only unlocks 20 points;
- A master user (e.g., heavy-duty Vibe Coding) can overclock and achieve even 100 points.
So:
- Primary student + AI beginner = 30 points
- Einstein + AI expert = 200 points
The gap widens from 90 to 170 points. Thus, AI actually increases the difference between people!
This is the view of teachers Laobai and Alvin—and they’re not wrong.
But still, despite appearances, my view and theirs aren't truly conflicting—they share a similar core. Why?
Because I assume AI will keep evolving:
First, becoming smarter;
Second, becoming easier to use.
2025 is just a transitional year. Going forward, becoming a Prompt Engineer will get simpler and simpler, the barrier lower and lower—eventually "just having a mouth" will suffice. Learning to use AI will become easier, not harder.
Suppose after evolving, AI reaches 240 points, and development levels range from 200 (low), 240 (medium), to 280 (high).
Then:
- Primary student = 10 + 200 = 210 points
- Einstein = 100 + 280 = 380 points
The absolute gap is 170 points, but the relative ratio drops below 2x to just 1.8x. Absolute difference grows, but relative difference shrinks.
What about 10 years later? Super optimistic scenario: AI cognition evolves to around 1000 points.
Then:
- Primary student: 1010 points
- Einstein: 1100 points
(If this ever happens) Einstein won’t be able to maintain any meaningful gap over a primary student.
Many believe AI has widened human differences—but I think that’s just a *temporary state*, because AI is new and people currently exploit it to varying degrees.
But AI replaces writers, artists, dancers, creators—one profession after another falls. Do you really think AI won’t replace the teacher who trains people to fully unlock AI’s potential?
Come on, that’s AI’s bread and butter.
In the future, it’ll be normal for everyone to harness 80%-120% of AI’s potential—not an exception.
The smarter AI gets, the smaller the role of humans becomes, and the narrower the gap between people grows.
It’s like two martial arts masters suddenly discovering they’re allowed to use shoulder-mounted rocket launchers. What does it matter if one trained fists for 10 years and the other a sword for 15?
