x402 is an open, chain-agnostic standard protocol that deeply integrates blockchain payment processes with the HTTP protocol. Its workflow is as follows: when a client (e.g., an AI Agent) sends a resource request, if payment has not been completed, the server returns an HTTP 402 status code along with structured JSON data in the response body, including information such as the maximum required amount (maxAmountRequired), payee address (payTo), and asset contract address (e.g., USDC). The client then generates a payment authorization using EIP-712 signatures. After the server verifies this authorization, it broadcasts and settles the transaction, enabling end-to-end automated payments.
