Interactive Tutorial: Towns, Backed by a16z and Set to Launch Token in Q2 — It's Still Not Too Late to Join
With a total financing of $35.5 million, will Towns give the decentralized social sector another chance?
By Asher, Odaily Planet Daily
This morning, Towns, a social protocol backed by a16z and having raised a total of $35.5 million in funding, announced on X that it will launch its TOWNS token in Q2 2025. The total supply of TOWNS will be 10 billion tokens, with an initial 10% allocated for airdrops.

Towns confirms token launch this quarter
According to on-chain data, as of April 10, Towns has over 400,000 registered users, with 200,000 users holding points. The total number of towns (communities) stands at 328,000. Notably, fewer than 50,000 users—specifically 48,500—have accumulated more than 5,000 points. Therefore, compared to "blue-chip" projects like Monad, competition on Towns remains relatively low. Additionally, the official team has confirmed the token launch this quarter, and the airdrop is highly likely to be tied to user points. Participation is worthwhile to secure a share of the initial 10% airdrop allocation.

Next, Odaily Planet Daily walks you through the Towns project and provides a step-by-step guide to participating and earning points to qualify for potential token airdrops.
Towns: A Blockchain-Based Discord

Towns is a group chat protocol and application designed specifically for online communities. It consists of three components: smart contracts, a decentralized node network, and applications built on the Towns protocol. Its defining feature is the concept of a "town square," integrating communities, NFTs, and games into a unified platform. Towns offers users an Ethereum-based smart contract system combined with end-to-end encrypted messaging, enabling community members to own their town squares and communicate freely via a fully decentralized, private chat protocol.
Towns provides foundational building blocks for users to create their ideal communities. Ownership of each Town is recorded on-chain, making it transferable, sellable, or holdable by another smart contract—such as a DAO or multisig wallet. Moreover, Towns empowers communities to create programmable, autonomous gathering spaces, build custom clients or APIs, and retain full control and customization so any group can organize using Towns, chat freely, and define rules tailored to their needs. Community owners can also design unique experiences around communities, NFTs, and games—such as selling access keys to specific channels, rewarding member contributions, or enabling direct NFT trading within chats.
The founding team behind Towns is Here Not There Labs, established in 2020 by Rubin (former CEO and co-founder of Houseparty and Meerkat) and Brian Meek (former CTO of STRIVR Labs and former Engineering General Manager at Skype).
According to ROOTDATA, Towns has completed two funding rounds totaling $35.5 million:
-
On February 23, 2023, Towns announced a $25.5 million Series A round led by a16z Crypto, with participation from Benchmark, Framework Ventures, and others;
-
On April 11, 2025, Towns announced a $10 million Series B round, again led by a16z Crypto, with Coinbase Ventures, Benchmark, and others participating.

Participation Guide
Currently, while details about the point accumulation mechanism have not been fully disclosed, each newly connected channel automatically receives an NFT confirming participation. If a user creates their own channel, it becomes an independent smart contract on the blockchain. Below, Odaily Planet Daily guides you through registration, creating your own town, joining others’ communities, and earning points.
STEP 1. Visit the official website (link: https://app.towns.com/) and click “Login” to register. You can currently sign up using your Google email, X account, or Farcaster.

STEP 2. Click the “wallet icon” to fund your personal wallet, selecting a Base chain address to deposit ETH (a deposit worth approximately $10 in ETH is sufficient).

STEP 3. As shown below, click the “+” button to create a Town. Upload a profile picture and name for your Town, then choose between a “Free” or “Paid” Town. For Paid Towns, you may set either a fixed fee (minimum 0.001 ETH) or dynamic pricing. Importantly, only creating or joining a “Paid” Town qualifies you for point rewards. If you're interested in joining a community, feel free to join the Town I created (click here to join), which charges the minimum fee, where we can discuss trending projects together.

STEP 4. As illustrated below, click the “beaver” icon to check in daily (this requires paying Base chain gas fees for on-chain confirmation), earning 1 point per check-in.
STEP 5. Actively participate in discussions and interactions within your Town to boost engagement. You can also receive points through tips from other users.
