TikTok Meme Hits: Lost 50% of My Account After Binge-Watching Videos All Night
Using TikTok as a traffic hub, can it attract numerous Web2 users into Web3?
By Fu He Ru, Odaily Planet Daily
While the wave of AI and biotech-themed memes continues, TikTok has once again elevated meme culture to new heights in terms of virality and traffic.
The TikTok meme coin CHILL GUY began surging on the 19th, with its 24-hour trading volume exceeding $300 million and market cap rapidly climbing to $500 million, drawing significant market attention to TikTok-driven memes. A slew of new TikTok-inspired meme coins quickly followed, intensifying FOMO across the market. But which of these truly stand out? As Warren Buffett famously said: “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.”
Odaily Planet Daily dove headfirst into this TikTok meme wave and compiled our firsthand experience, including insights on two promising TikTok meme projects worth watching.
Meme Experience: After a Night of Scrolling, My Portfolio Dropped by 50%
Last night, I scoured various meme groups searching for the next big opportunity and noticed that TikTok memes were gaining traction within crypto circles.
Having missed the AI and biotech meme waves, I rushed in with a few SOL. Shoutout to HTX's super popular sister for briefing me on the current TikTok meme landscape.
From what I gathered, CHILL GUY (also known as "Dragon One") was leading the pack—reaching a $500 million market cap in just four days, with over $550 million in 24-hour trading volume. The moment I opened TikTok, it was already being recommended everywhere. Other trending memes like WAIT, HUZZ, and GRIDDY soon followed.
As a value-investing newbie in the meme space, I downloaded TikTok and started “scrolling” through relevant content, hoping to grasp the essence of this phenomenon.
I began with the hottest one—CHILL GUY. What appeared was a cartoon character resembling a guinea pig, hands in pockets, expression calm and indifferent, preaching about staying chill in all situations. Paired with an oddly catchy background track, the vibe was instantly addictive. I immediately checked GMGN to analyze market data—the market cap had just passed $500 million, prices kept rising. Fearing I’d miss the train, I bought in with SOL.
Next, I explored other trending memes: WAIT, HUZZ, and GRIDDY. WAIT originated from a viral dance trend similar to those seen on China’s Douyin, where users imitate a quirky choreography; HUZZ seemed to be newly coined slang, with many commenting or asking about its meaning in videos. Personally, I believe it mimics a buzzing sound—most other memes were variations on such simple concepts.
After hours of research, I felt confident I understood TikTok memes. Below is a reflection I wrote last night, incorporating insights from Placeholder partner Chris Burniske earlier that day:
Memes have one core trait: they require shared recognition among a community to form a cultural phenomenon. Most previous crypto meme coins needed post-launch cultivation—even self-conditioning by investors—to establish their cultural identity. However, TikTok-authenticated meme cultures already come with massive built-in audiences. As Chris Burniske noted, “When meme coins combine with TikTok’s viral reach, they hit peak potential.” This fusion represents exactly the kind of mass adoption Web3 has long pursued—but this time, it’s being driven organically by Web2. That shift carries profound implications.
Interestingly, this morning I found my meme portfolio down 50%. Of the tokens I bought last night, only two remained: CHILL GUY, down 50%, and WAIT. Others like HUZZ and GRIDDY either collapsed or vanished entirely.
I’m relieved I didn’t go all-in on low-market-cap tokens like HUZZ and GRIDDY—otherwise, this article might be filled with rage instead of reflection. Here are some lessons learned from my mistakes, shared for others to consider:
-
Even if you’re emotionally drawn to a meme’s cultural appeal, stay rational when buying. Evaluate whether your entry point makes sense and avoid FOMO. Yesterday, fearing I’d “miss the bus,” I ignored broader market sentiment and bought at a top—resulting in a 50% loss.
-
Few meme coins survive long-term market scrutiny. To pick winners among countless memes, prioritize first-mover advantage and viral reach. Although CHILL GUY caused me a 50% loss, I still see value in its early lead, large market cap, and market validation. In contrast, HUZZ and GRIDDY emerged only after CHILL GUY blew up—they may offer short-term gains but are heavily PVP-oriented, unsuitable for meme beginners.
-
Use tools wisely—check on-chain holdings, liquidity, etc. I’m not skilled here yet, but colleagues excel: Nan Zhi’s copy-trading strategy, Golem’s opening surge tactics, Asher’s investment frameworks. For detailed strategies, refer to Odaily’s weekly Meme Trading Report.
As of now, I remain bullish on CHILL GUY and plan to add more at appropriate levels. Notably, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele just posted a CHILLGUY-themed meme on X, helping CHILLGUY rebound back to a $500 million market cap. One caveat: this project currently lacks an official Twitter account or clear team. While that adds authenticity (very “meme”), it also raises concerns about sustainability—a key difference from earlier AI and biotech meme cycles.
Currently, there are two main ways to spot TikTok memes: First, browse trending TikTok videos, identify keywords, then check if matching tokens exist on-chain—prioritize those with high holder counts and strong liquidity. Second, follow social media and meme communities to see which memes most players are backing. This method may mean entering late, but offers higher conviction.
In summary, TikTok memes represent a new model—using TikTok as ground zero to funnel vast Web2 traffic into Web3, fundamentally different from how past meme coins emerged. Yet, many projects are purely opportunistic. Within hours, numerous “CHILL”-branded tokens popped up. Given the recent emergence of this trend, my overnight experience reflects a harsh reality: most of these tokens have extremely short lifespans. Exercise caution.
CHILL GUY

CHILL GUY is the flagship meme coin of the TikTok meme movement. It originated from a video posted on September 13 by creator helicoptero_eli, featuring a cartoon character exuding calmness and indifference toward everyday chaos, paired with a hypnotic soundtrack. Though derivative content existed between mid-September and early November, widespread virality only ignited recently. Currently, related videos total around 24,000 online, amassing over 20 million views.
True to its name, CHILL GUY embodies composure, emotional stability, and unshakable cool. Words can’t fully capture it—watch the video.

WAIT

WAIT stems from a viral dance challenge on TikTok, sparking global imitation. Its popularity surpasses CHILL GUY in scale, with approximately 1.5 million related videos and over 100 million total views. Likely inspired by CHILL GUY’s success, WAIT was launched on Solana.
In my view, WAIT lacks the same depth of cultural resonance as CHILL GUY—its narrative foundation feels thinner.
According to GMGN data, WAIT trades at $0.02 USDT, up 89% in 24 hours, with a $20 million market cap and $136 million in 24-hour trading volume.
