A slew of new TikTok-inspired meme coins quickly followed, intensifying FOMO across the market. But which of these truly stand out? Paired with an oddly catchy background track, the vibe was instantly addictive. I immediately checked GMGN to analyze market data—the market cap had just passed $500 million, prices kept rising. Fearing I’d miss the train, I bought in with SOL.
Next, I explored other trending memes: WAIT, HUZZ, and GRIDDY. WAIT originated from a viral dance trend similar to those seen on China’s Douyin, where users imitate a quirky choreography; HUZZ seemed to be newly coined slang, with many commenting or asking about its meaning in videos. Personally, I believe it mimics a buzzing sound—most other memes were variations on such simple concepts.
After hours of research, I felt confident I understood TikTok memes. Below is a reflection I wrote last night, incorporating insights from Placeholder partner Chris Burniske earlier that day:
Memes have one core trait: they require shared recognition among a community to form a cultural phenomenon. Most previous crypto meme coins needed post-launch cultivation—even self-conditioning by investors—to establish their cultural identity. In my view, WAIT lacks the same depth of cultural resonance as CHILL GUY—its narrative foundation feels thinner.
