EOS Network achieves major upgrade enabling 1-second transaction finality
This upgrade introduces the Savanna consensus algorithm, marking a new era of network performance, reliability, and speed.

On September 25, 2024, the EOS Network announced the successful completion of its landmark Spring 1.0 upgrade. This upgrade introduces the Savanna consensus algorithm, marking a new era in network performance, reliability, and speed. By improving transaction finality to just one second, EOS has achieved over 100 times better performance than previous iterations. These rapid advancements in speed, security, and scalability lay the foundation for future breakthroughs in crypto.
The upgrade reflects the shared vision and dedication of EOS’s global decentralized community, underscoring its commitment to pioneering blockchain innovation.
Bart Wyatt, Chief Technology Officer at the EOS Network Foundation, highlighted the strategic significance of this development: “With the Spring 1.0 upgrade and the introduction of the Savanna consensus algorithm, we’ve accomplished something rare in the blockchain world—changing our core consensus algorithm. Very few Layer-1 blockchains have ever done this. I can only think of a few—Ethereum being the most famous. By doing so, we stand on sacred ground. By bringing EOS to an industry-leading 1-second finality, we’ve taken a giant leap forward, positioning EOS at the forefront of blockchain innovation. This isn’t just a technical achievement—it’s about full ownership by the EOS community.”
The EOS Network has completed its transition to Antelope Spring 1.0, following a dispute-free upgrade path. This process demonstrated collaborative efforts within the EOS community, including extensive beta testing and distributed activation led by global Block Producers (BPs).
The Savanna consensus algorithm revolutionizes blockchain efficiency. By integrating advanced cryptographic techniques such as aggregated BLS signatures, Savanna ensures fast and irreversible transactions, enhancing network security and scalability while unlocking new use cases across the blockchain industry.
Yves La Rose, CEO of the EOS Network Foundation, said: “Spring 1.0 marks a pivotal moment for the blockchain industry, introducing the Savanna consensus algorithm with 1-second instant finality through cutting-edge BLS cryptographic advancements. This upgrade delivers unparalleled transaction speed, reliability, and security, laying the groundwork for the flourishing of next-generation decentralized applications. Achieving this was a monumental effort combining internal teams and external partners, positioning EOS as one of the most technologically advanced platforms available.”
As a transformative phase, Spring 1.0 brings new growth opportunities and adoption to the ecosystem. It unlocks unprecedented value for developers and anyone investing in the long-term potential of blockchain innovation. With mature technology and robust infrastructure, the future holds limitless possibilities as EOS drives the industry forward.”
With the EOS Network advancing through Spring 1.0, it lays the foundation for continuous innovation and community growth. This significant technological leap unlocks a vast array of new use cases and strengthens the EOS ecosystem.
Areg Hayrapetian, Engineering Director at the EOS Network Foundation and lead architect of the Savanna consensus algorithm:
“The development of the Savanna consensus algorithm followed a more rigorous approach, replacing EOS’s previously unnamed traditional consensus mechanism. We used proof-of-concept implementations to detect and fix design flaws early, conducted multiple rounds of iterative testing, and applied mathematical analysis to ensure the algorithm maintains critical liveness and safety properties—the core attributes of any blockchain we aim to build: being available when needed, and ensuring that once a transaction is marked final, it will never be reversed. By doing our homework well on Savanna, EOS users can now take these assurances for granted and enjoy dramatically reduced finality times—from minutes down to just one second.”
