Mixed Results: 11 Charts Decoding the August Crypto Market

1. In August, the total adjusted on-chain transaction volume for Bitcoin and Ethereum declined by 15.3%, falling to $377 billion. Bitcoin's adjusted on-chain transaction volume dropped 12.1%, while Ethereum's fell 20.2%.

2. Adjusted stablecoin on-chain transaction volume increased by 20.5% in August, reaching $1.2 trillion. Stablecoin issuance supply grew 2.9% to $148.4 billion, with USDT and USDC holding market shares of 78.7% and 17.4%, respectively.

3. Bitcoin miner revenue reached $851.4 million in August, down 10.4%. Additionally, Ethereum staking revenue declined 19.3% to $218.2 million.

4. In August, a total of 13,467 ETH—worth approximately $34.9 million—was burned on the Ethereum network. Since the implementation of EIP-1559 in early August 2021, Ethereum has burned around 4.37 million ETH, valued at approximately $12.3 billion.

5. On-chain NFT market transaction volume on Ethereum continued its downward trend in August, declining 12.8% to approximately $123.2 million.

6. Spot trading volume on compliant centralized exchanges (CEX) increased in August by 13.7%, rising to $877.5 billion.

7. Net inflows into spot Bitcoin ETFs turned negative in August, with outflows totaling approximately $422.1 million.

8. In cryptocurrency futures, Bitcoin futures open interest declined 17.9% in August, while Ethereum futures open interest dropped 28.6%. In terms of futures trading volume, Bitcoin futures volume decreased 20.2% to $1.33 trillion, and Ethereum futures volume fell 22.2%.

9. CME Bitcoin futures open interest decreased 15.3% in August, falling to $9 billion. Daily average trading volume dropped 0.2% to approximately $5.04 billion.

10. Average monthly Ethereum futures trading volume declined by $587.5 billion in August, representing a 22.2% drop.

11. In cryptocurrency options, Bitcoin options open interest declined 3.8% in August, while Ethereum options open interest fell 13.9%. Regarding trading volume, monthly Bitcoin options trading volume reached $53.8 billion, down 5.4%; Ethereum options trading volume was $15.5 billion, remaining largely flat compared to last month.
