The world has underestimated the significance of the arrest of Telegram's founder

Forty-eight hours ago, Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, was arrested as his private plane landed near Paris.
Durov, born in Russia, leads Telegram, a platform with nearly one billion active users. The Russian government has requested Durov's extradition to Russia. It's true that Telegram has sometimes been misused—for instance, by terrorists for communication or for sharing child sexual abuse material (the two worst possible uses one could imagine).
Given these facts, what conclusion can you possibly reach other than that Durov is a villain?
But that would be wrong. Most people have this story completely backwards. In reality, Durov is a hero.
Durov’s first company, VK, was once Russia’s largest social network. He founded it at around age 21, practically still a child. Because Durov refused to cooperate with the Russian government, the company was seized from him by state authorities.
This experience transformed Durov. After leaving VK, he created Telegram with a clear mission: to build a system designed in every way to resist collaboration with authoritarian regimes. He wanted to create a platform that could transcend borders and dictatorships, enabling citizens to communicate freely.
Somewhere along the way, global perception of Durov has taken a dark turn. “This app was used for bad things, and he’s Russian—so he must be a bad guy!” But people forget that Telegram has played a crucial role in numerous democratic protests over the past decade. Many refer to Belarus’ 2020 protests as the “Telegram Revolution.” Here are some headlines and excerpts from the Associated Press in 2020:

Let’s go deeper. Pavel Durov became a French citizen in 2021. How did he obtain this passport? Gaining French citizenship is rare and difficult—but this one was personally granted by President Macron. We don’t know exactly why Macron chose to do this, but perhaps it was due to Telegram’s role in organizing protests against Russian-backed regimes?

Somewhat inexplicably, for the past 48 hours (outside of X), Western narratives have overwhelmingly presumed Durov’s guilt rather than innocence. The French government has just filed 12 charges against him, most involving horrific allegations such as “possession of images depicting minors in pornographic contexts.” You might ask yourself, “I know Telegram has been used to send such content—how could he possibly be innocent?”
You’re missing one key point: Durov has spent his adult life as an enemy of authoritarian governments. Many Western nations are rapidly drifting toward authoritarianism—and thus, Durov has now become their enemy too.
You're also overlooking Russia’s extradition request. By making this request, Russia stands to gain three major advantages:
-
They embarrass the West and expose the decay of the liberal values it claims to uphold.
-
They tarnish Durov’s reputation—because he is one of their enemies.
-
If he is extradited to Russia, they can exert control over him and potentially gain the backdoor access they’ve always wanted.
I don’t know much about France’s political system or how much influence President Macron truly holds. But from the outside, he has always appeared to me as someone who cares about justice. I hope he finds a way to intervene.
The charges against Durov could theoretically be brought against any social media platform. I cannot stress enough how critical the coming days are. The free values of the West are under unprecedented attack—and few truly understand the depth of this threat.
