Meme Coin with the Same Name Surges 7x: What Exactly Is the 'd/acc' Concept Proposed by Vitalik?
Vitalik Buterin proposes defensive accelerationism "d/acc," which shows a significant difference in attitude toward technological development compared to the effective accelerationism "e/acc" popular in Silicon Valley.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin once praised the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) as one of Ethereum's most successful non-financial applications. Today, on-chain data shows that at noon he suddenly minted a new ENS domain, dacc.eth, and announced he will discuss the concept of d/acc in an X audio space on August 22.

Surprisingly, according to DEX Screener data, the meme coin E/ACC with the same name surged over 700% within 15 minutes after the news broke, pushing its market cap to $5 million. However, it has since pulled back more than 63% from its peak, dropping to a market cap of $1.91 million.

d/acc is a concept first introduced by Vitalik Buterin in November last year. Shortly afterward, a namesake meme coin, d/acc, emerged. However, by December last year, reports surfaced that the project team had abandoned operations, and the token price nearly collapsed to zero. Despite today’s surge driven by Vitalik’s activity, the official website has already disappeared.
What is d/acc?
In November last year, Vitalik Buterin published an article exploring his views on techno-optimism, AI risks, and ways to avoid centralization in today's world.
Vitalik believes that while technological advancement carries risks, its benefits far outweigh potential harms. People should not blindly pursue profit but consciously guide the direction of technological development to ensure progress leads to a better future for humanity.
To address the tension between technological advancement and centralization, Vitalik proposed "defensive accelerationism" (d/acc), which contrasts sharply with Silicon Valley’s popular "effective accelerationism" (e/acc) in its approach to technological development:
1. e/acc: This term gained popularity in Silicon Valley startup circles after the emergence of ChatGPT. Proponents emphasize the immense benefits of technological progress and advocate accelerating this trend to realize those benefits faster. e/acc supporters often criticize regulatory bodies like the FDA for their conservative stance on drug and technology approvals, arguing such caution delays life-saving treatments.
2. d/acc: Emphasizes defense, decentralization, democracy, and differentiation. It seeks to create and maintain a more democratic world, avoiding centralized solutions as the default. d/acc advocates detailed risk management strategies while aiming to prevent excessive concentration of power.
Vitalik advocates building a "defense-first" worldview, arguing that a society oriented toward defense is better because it not only directly enhances safety and reduces conflict but also enables healthier, more open, and freedom-respecting governance models to thrive. In his article, he expanded on the meaning of the letter "D":
"D" can stand for Defence, Decentralization, Democracy, and Differential.
How do they differ in their views on AI threatening humanity?
d/acc takes a more cautious stance toward AI’s potential threats, believing that concentrated power could lead to AI misuse. It emphasizes decentralization and broad participation, enabling more people to monitor and influence AI development. d/acc argues that through distributed technologies and transparent decision-making processes, the risk of AI being controlled by a few individuals and used against humanity can be reduced.
e/acc holds a more optimistic view of AI’s potential dangers, seeing AI development as an inevitable trend. By accelerating progress, proponents believe superintelligence can be achieved early enough to solve humanity’s greatest challenges. e/acc pays less attention to AI-related risks and tends to trust that technological advancement will ultimately benefit humankind.
