Numbers Behind the MEME War: Ethereum Achieves Higher Value Consensus, While Solana Grabs Attention as Traffic Driver
Meme coins on Solana excel at quickly capitalizing on trending topics to capture traffic, while demonstrating stronger price volatility and appeal to capital.

Whether in terms of price performance or ecosystem development, the competition between Ethereum and Solana often becomes a focal point for industry attention. In this meme-driven crypto bull market, what characteristics and trends do meme tokens on both networks exhibit?
PANews compared the market performance of leading and popular meme projects on Ethereum and Solana, finding that Ethereum—the early birthplace of memes—enjoys higher market share and recognition due to its stronger financial and user foundation, while offering diverse meme types that cater to various investor preferences. In contrast, Solana excels at quickly leveraging trending topics to capture traffic and demonstrates greater price volatility and capital appeal.
Meme Leadership Battle: Ethereum Has Stronger Community Foundation and Consensus; Solana Shows Clear Short-Term Wealth Effect
Memes have gradually become one of the key sectors in the cryptocurrency market. According to Forbes citing CoinMarketCap data, during the first half of 2024’s crypto rally, tokens such as WIF, PEPE, and FLOKI outperformed mainstream assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Additionally, CoinGecko's Q2 2024 report highlights that memecoins were the most popular narrative this quarter, accounting for 14.3% of total market share.
Among these, Ethereum and Solana are undoubtedly the primary battlegrounds for memecoins. According to PANews statistics, as of July 16, the total market cap of memecoins exceeded $54.1 billion, with daily trading volume nearing $7.87 billion. The combined market cap of the top 10 meme projects—mostly from Ethereum and Solana—surpassed $44.55 billion, representing 82.2% of the total.

Multiple metrics—including market share, development timeline, user base, and diversity—indicate that Ethereum’s top memes hold an absolute market advantage with a robust community foundation, whereas Solana has demonstrated a stronger short-term wealth effect this year.
Among the top 10 meme projects by market cap, half originate from Ethereum, with a combined market cap of $37.55 billion, capturing over 69.4% of the market. In comparison, 40% of these projects are built on Solana, totaling approximately $5.53 billion in market cap and holding 10.2% market share. This reflects the current market’s higher recognition of Ethereum-based meme values relative to Solana.
In terms of launch timing, high-market-cap memes on Ethereum generally launched earlier, with DOGE being the earliest at December 2013—and also the highest in market cap. In contrast, breakout memes on Solana tend to be relatively newer, with the earliest notable project BONK launching in December 2022. As such, Ethereum memes have undergone longer market validation, giving them more time to build consensus.
Holder address counts further highlight Ethereum memes’ deeper user base and higher community acceptance. According to PANews data as of July 16, the top 10 meme projects collectively had over 10.494 million unique addresses, with DOGE, SHIB, and BRETT leading in holder count. Ethereum-based memes accounted for about 8.793 million addresses (83.8%), while Solana-based ones totaled only 1.045 million (9.9%). Naturally, this disparity is partly due to Ethereum memes having a longer development history and having already experienced earlier significant price surges.
Looking at investment returns among the top 10 meme projects, these tokens averaged a gain of 1,890.8% this year, largely driven by exceptional performances from POPCAT and MOG. Ethereum memes rose 13.2-fold, while Solana memes surged nearly 30.4-fold, indicating Solana currently offers a stronger wealth effect, attracting more users and capital inflows—though this is influenced by factors such as later launch times and smaller initial market caps. However, there was little difference in downside resilience between top projects on both chains: Ethereum saw an average drawdown of 46.1%, compared to Solana’s 47.6%.
Popular Meme Comparison: Solana Excels at “Meme Culture,” While Ethereum Enjoys Higher Recognition
Capturing trending themes can help investors ride market waves, significantly influencing user participation—especially for memecoins, which epitomize attention-based economics and easily become speculative vehicles when viral. This section compares five popular same-name meme projects across Ethereum and Solana in terms of launch time, market cap, price change, and liquidity.

Timing can significantly affect capital accumulation and profitability, making sensitivity to trend capture a crucial factor for meme investors. In terms of launch time, several Solana-based memes—including FIGHT and FEAR NOT—launched earlier than their Ethereum counterparts, suggesting Solana may attract meme-focused participants more readily.
Current trading volumes of trending memes also show Solana attracts more on-chain users and capital than Ethereum. For example, according to DEX Screener data, the top 20 meme trading pairs on Solana recorded over $280 million in trading volume in the past 24 hours, accounting for 15.5% of the network’s total. In contrast, Ethereum’s top 20 meme pairs generated $190 million, or 9.3% of its daily volume.
Higher returns are naturally more attractive to investors. Among these five meme projects, Ethereum achieved an average peak return of over 43.6x, while Solana delivered over 78.2x. Maximum drawdown figures show Solana slightly ahead in risk resilience, averaging 63.9% decline versus Ethereum’s 67.7%.
However, Solana memes face issues with insufficient liquidity and significantly lower market caps compared to Ethereum. Liquidity plays a critical role in asset allocation and trading decisions, with ample liquidity typically signaling greater market resilience. Across these five projects, Ethereum consistently shows superior liquidity—sometimes exceeding Solana by more than tenfold. For instance, Ethereum’s MAGA holds 15.5 times more liquidity than its Solana counterpart. Market cap also reflects broader market acceptance: Ethereum-based meme projects command much higher valuations. Despite FIGHT launching on both chains within just two hours of each other, its Ethereum version boasts a market cap nearly 5.5 times larger.
Moreover, Ethereum offers a wider variety of meme themes, influencing overall user reach. Data from DEX Screener shows that among the top 20 meme trading pairs over the past 24 hours, Solana features some PoliFi-themed projects related to Trump and J.D. Vance, but primarily focuses on animal motifs like cats and dogs. On Ethereum, while similar political themes exist, they appear in greater numbers, alongside a broader range of animal-inspired memes—including frogs, cats, and dogs—with numerous derivatives stemming from PEPE.
