What are the highlights of Worldcoin's World ID 2.0 update?
You no longer need to verify your iris to use Worldcoin.

Last night, Worldcoin underwent a major protocol upgrade, launching the World ID 2.0 digital passport and a high-performance developer platform. Alex Blania, CEO of Worldcoin, described the release of World ID 2.0 as being "a bit like Apple releasing a new version of iOS" in conversation with BlockBeats.
On July 24 this year, Worldcoin officially launched. Its underlying idea is simple: AI will generate vast wealth for humanity, but it could also eliminate many jobs, as eventually it may become nearly impossible to distinguish humans from bots. To address this gap, two solutions are proposed: first, creating a robust proof-of-personhood system so individuals can prove they are human; second, providing Universal Basic Income (UBI) to everyone.
What makes Worldcoin unique is its reliance on highly sophisticated biometric technology. It uses specialized hardware called the "Orb" to scan each user's iris and generate a World ID—the foundational identity protocol of Worldcoin—that ensures one person can register only one account via iris scan. According to official website data, 4.8 million people have already obtained a World ID.
World ID 1.0, as an open and permissionless identity protocol, not only serves as a global universal digital passport but also enables anonymous proof of uniqueness—proving "you are you" without revealing personal privacy.
So, what aspects has World ID 2.0 upgraded upon World ID 1.0, and what innovations and promising features does it bring?
Highlights of World ID 2.0
World ID App Store
World ID 2.0 has been integrated with mainstream platforms in e-commerce, gaming, and social media, including a plugin for Reddit, a bot for Telegram, integration with Shopify, and apps such as Mercado Libre and Minecraft. Previous integrations include Discord, Talent Protocol, and Okta’s Auth0.
Tiago Sada, Product Director at Worldcoin, told BlockBeats that through World ID 2.0 integration, Reddit moderators can grant special privileges to users who verify with their World ID, “so they know you’re not spamming.” In games like Minecraft where bot activity is rampant, adopting World ID could help reduce such behavior.
For example, merchants offering discounts on Shopify can use World ID to ensure each user receives the discount only once. Additionally, the team is building a Shopify store for Worldcoin where users can purchase items, and those with a verified World ID may receive certain goods for free.
At the same time, Worldcoin has built a developer platform for World ID applications, enabling developers to build apps on top of it.
Regarding specific app development, for instance, there will be an SDK for Shopify, allowing developers to create integrations for the Shopify system. These integrations would then be reviewed by the Shopify team and approved by Worldcoin for listing, after which users can connect directly. Tiago explained that this is similar to building apps on Apple’s ecosystem—except these aren’t developed by Apple itself, but rather by third-party developers using Apple’s development framework.
On December 6, the Worldcoin Foundation announced a $5 million community grant program called "Wave0," aimed at enabling developers to “focus on building resilient technologies and fairer systems on Worldcoin.” Funding will be provided in WLD tokens.
Developers building World ID applications can apply for grants under this program. Remco Bloemen, Protocol Lead at Worldcoin, said in an interview that these grants are not just for developers—“the community needs to make broader efforts,” including raising awareness and educating people about the importance of the technology in addressing issues related to “income inequality, governance, and other existential risks.”
World ID Verification Tiers
World ID 1.0 had only one type of verification. World ID 2.0 introduces three different levels of verification: World ID Device, World ID Orb, and World ID Orb+. These cover a range from everyday general needs to higher-security requirements, allowing developers to choose the appropriate verification level for their application.
World ID Device is a lower-level verification method that removes retinal scanning and allows users to authenticate using their own devices. This helps extend World ID access to people unable to reach Orb locations and can be used for logging into applications where strict identity verification isn't required.
World ID Orb is a mid-tier verification option introduced for platform-integrated apps, striking a good balance between convenience and security for most applications.
World ID Orb+ represents a stricter verification standard. If developers opt for this tier, users must re-authenticate themselves on their device every time they log in with World ID, and facial recognition is also required to enhance application security.

In addition, Worldcoin Product Director Tiago revealed to BlockBeats that if users lose their World ID, they can now recover it under World ID 2.0; if a World ID expires, it can be directly updated from the mobile phone; and for those who change their mind and no longer want their World ID, they can now cancel it directly from their phone.
Worldcoin to Continue Deepening Presence in Asian Markets
The update to World ID 2.0 reminds the crypto community once again that we are getting closer to mass adoption. Beyond integrating more applications and upgrading verification methods, Worldcoin has several recent developments worth noting—most notably, its preparations to expand operations in Singapore.
Previously, BlockBeats conducted an exclusive interview with Worldcoin CEO Alex Blania and Product Director Tiago Sada, both of whom identified the Asian market as strategically critical to Worldcoin’s growth.
During his participation in the Token2049 event in Singapore, Alex stated that Worldcoin will now focus more on promotion and operations. He also expressed surprise at the level of enthusiasm in the Asian region. In November, the Worldcoin team revisited Asia, holding in-depth exchanges with developers and users in South Korea, Hong Kong, and other locations. This trip significantly influenced the strategic direction of the Worldcoin team.
On November 13, Tools for Humanity, the development team behind Worldcoin, announced that the latest update to the World App now supports Simplified Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, and Korean languages, along with currency displays in Indian Rupee ($), Japanese Yen ($), South Korean Won (₩), and Singapore Dollar ($), catering specifically to market demands across Asia.
It is foreseeable that the Worldcoin team will continue expanding the application scenarios for the World ID identity protocol, bringing it into the daily lives of more ordinary people.
