Elon Musk, after acquiring Twitter, has pulled another controversial move!
Last Friday, Musk suddenly announced that users without a Twitter account can no longer read tweets. He claimed that companies using AI models are scraping massive amounts of Twitter data, causing traffic issues on the site. "Hundreds of organizations—maybe more—are extremely aggressively scraping Twitter data, to the point where it's impacting the experience of real users," he said.
He has also expressed dissatisfaction with AI firms like OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, for using Twitter data to train large language models.
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector.com, thousands of Twitter users experienced account issues on Saturday. At the peak around 11:17 a.m. Eastern Time (approximately 11:17 p.m. in Singapore), nearly 7,500 users reported problems accessing Twitter.
On Saturday, yet another extreme measure was introduced.
On July 1, Musk announced that to combat "extreme levels" of data scraping and system manipulation, Twitter is limiting the number of tweets users can view per day.
Initially, verified accounts were limited to 6,000 tweets per day, unverified accounts to 600 tweets per day, and newly registered unverified accounts to 300 tweets per day.
The move sparked widespread backlash from users.
Thousands complained about being unable to access Twitter normally. Trending hashtags such as #GoodbyeTwitter and #RipTwitter emerged. Some users said they would abandon Twitter for other social media platforms if the restrictions continued.
Perhaps due to public pressure, Musk later backtracked, increasing the daily tweet viewing limits to 10,000 for verified accounts, 1,000 for unverified accounts, and 500 for new unverified accounts.
Musk tweeted: "Wake up from your sleep, put down your phone, and go see your family and friends."

After spending tens of billions of dollars to acquire Twitter, he's now afraid people might get too addicted—so he restricts usage and preaches against screen addiction, urging everyone to step away from their phones and spend time with loved ones. What kind of internationalist spirit and compassion is this? Is Musk truly a global benefactor, an internet philanthropist?
