First BNB Greenfield testnet launches, community calls on developers to revolutionize data ownership
BNB Greenfield's first testnet, codenamed "Congo," went live on April 10, 2023.

- Developers can contribute to the decentralized storage technology stack by becoming validator nodes, storage providers (SPs), and dApp builders
- BNB Greenfield will provide optimized decentralized storage infrastructure for the Web3 community, empowering users with data freedom and true data ownership
April 11, 2023 – The first testnet of BNB Greenfield, codenamed "Congo," launched on April 10, 2023. As a bridge connecting the BNB Chain ecosystem to the trillion-dollar decentralized storage market, BNB Greenfield is committed to revolutionizing user data ownership in the Web3 community through a community-driven, open-source, and distributed approach.
Decentralized storage is crucial for the dApp world. Greenfield aims to deliver fast, cost-effective data services comparable to Web2 cloud storage, targeting mass adoption. By introducing a network of validator nodes and storage providers (SPs) and achieving seamless integration with BNB Smart Chain, Greenfield offers a Web2-like storage user experience but with superior performance. It also provides users with greater data ownership, stronger anti-censorship capabilities, and native integration with Web3 applications and data.
Victor Genin, Senior Solution Architect at BNB Chain, said: "As a decentralized ecosystem, BNB Chain calls on the community to actively try out the Congo testnet and contribute to the network. Developers will be able to choose where to store their data—from decentralized endpoints to centralized storage services—while validator nodes will play a key role in shaping data ownership and utility in Web3."
Storage Providers (SPs) on the Greenfield testnet collaborate with testnet validator nodes to deliver complete storage services. SPs store actual data, while validator nodes handle metadata and financial ledgers via consensus. To become an SP, participants must deposit a "service bond" on the Greenfield blockchain and receive approval through voting by validator nodes. This design ensures efficient user data storage, redundancy, and security, while the PoS mechanism at the validator level guarantees decentralized governance.
BNB Greenfield excels in data storage and native integration with the BNB Chain ecosystem, unlocking the Web3 data economy by granting users true ownership of their data. With over 1,400 active dApps and 200 million unique addresses, BNB Chain already holds immense potential for a data-driven economy waiting to be tapped.
Initial features allow smooth transition for users and developers into decentralized storage. Data permissions can be moved cross-chain to BSC, transformed into tradable digital assets, and integrated with existing DeFi, NFT, GameFi, and SociaFi applications on BSC. Users can interact with BNB Greenfield to create wallets and manage data, while developers gain full control and ownership of their data assets. They can manually or programmatically set access rights and conditions, while monetizing their data. A native relay connects BSC and Greenfield, enabling BSC dApps to integrate with Greenfield using simple SDKs and minimal development. After the Greenfield mainnet launch, thousands of dApp datasets will become available, accelerating ecosystem growth and significantly lowering the barrier for data innovation compared to other chains.
BNB serves as both fuel and governance token for BNB Greenfield. Validator nodes stake BNB, participate in governance, and earn revenue from storage fees. Users create accounts, transfer BNB, manage storage resources, and utilize native cross-chain communication between BSC and Greenfield. Over time, increased usage of BNB in data storage and transactions will enhance its intrinsic value.
The role of BNB extends beyond being just a public chain token—it will unlock new possibilities. The global data storage market was valued at $217.02 billion in 2022 and is projected to reach $777.98 billion by 2030. As the BNB Greenfield ecosystem expands, it will unlock new opportunities and use cases centered around data. By combining robust on-chain guarantees with advanced decentralized storage technology, BNB Greenfield and BNB will grow together, playing a pivotal role in bringing the next billion users to the Web3 world.
The future of data storage and ownership has arrived, and BNB Greenfield is leading the transformation. Don't miss this turning point in decentralized technology—join the BNB Greenfield testnet today and be part of the data revolution!
All BNB Greenfield documentation and examples are available here. Special thanks to community member NodeReal—the leading Web3 infrastructure solution provider—for providing access to the block explorer and the BNB Greenfield client Dcellar. All projects are welcome to expand the open-source library at GitHub to develop commercial cases and tools for BNB Greenfield. Developers can also join the Greenfield track of the Zero2Hero Hackathon and apply for grants to build on Greenfield.
