Kevin Kelly has been known since the 1980s for his keen sense of direction regarding all things technological. His books on the subject over the past decades have consistently become bestsellers. Whenever new technologies emerge—such as artificial intelligence and blockchain—the world seeks his insights, and HistoryDAO is fortunate to have had a second direct conversation with him this year.
In their first interview, HistoryDAO engaged Mr. Kevin Kelly in an in-depth discussion on the theme of “what technology wants,” exploring topics such as “what blockchain technology wants” and “the role of NFTs.”
“You know London is the capital of the UK—that’s just a consensus,” Kevin Kelly said during the previous interview.
“That fact itself is a consensus—not merely its representation.” This part of Kelly’s discussion illuminated the role of consensus in truth, suggesting that the Platonic ideal of truth may always have been consensus. Of course, NFTs and blockchain are built upon codified consensus.
Keeping Mr. Kelly’s insights in mind, the HistoryDAO team began to recognize the importance of consensus—dating back to Plato, who founded Western philosophy by arguing that while objective truth exists, it can only be revealed through “dialectic,” a concept closely resembling modern ideas of consensus.
In the coming weeks, the HistoryDAO team, represented by founder Sky Harris, will join Mr. Kelly to expand this dialectic into one of today’s most popular and increasingly critical topics—artificial intelligence, or A.I. Can A.I. play a role—as a participant in dialectic itself—or will it soon be able to? Do blockchain and NFTs have unique access points to truth? These questions will be explored through the lens of historical lessons and technology’s future role. Mr. Kelly’s views on artificial intelligence will also be examined within the context of another of his passions—art—as a universal yet uniquely human endeavor.
