Solana moves into mobile: launches Mobile Stack and announces Android smartphone for 2023
Solana has decided to enter the hardware space directly by partnering with OSOMPrivacy to create an Android smartphone called Saga, which will come preloaded with the Solana Mobile Stack.

As is widely known, today's Web3 ecosystem is not primarily designed for smartphones—most interactions still require desktop browsers to be fully functional.
On June 24, Solana Labs made a major move by launching the Solana Mobile Stack.
Built on Android, this is a cryptographic layer enabling mobile users to seamlessly experience various Web3 applications directly from their phones.
Currently, the Solana Mobile Stack includes:
Private Key Vault in Secure Hardware
Generate private keys within a secure hardware enclave built into the phone itself. User-friendly with optional fingerprint unlock and cross-platform approval. AES encryption ensures greater key security and protection against forensic attacks.
Freedom to Develop Apps Quickly
Born for mobile, the Solana Mobile Stack offers a simple Android development environment that streamlines the developer experience—just like building any other Android app.
SolanaPay for Android
SolanaPay integration is built-in and directly connects wallets, enabling the creation of next-generation mobile payment experiences.
Decentralized dApp Store
Simplified submission and distribution of dApps.
……
Solana founder Anatoly Yakovenko said, “Web3 and privacy are inseparable. I can't imagine a Web3 application asking users for login credentials and passwords. From the start, Web3 should have been designed with user-generated identities as an option. Imagine mobile apps with no logins, no tracking—not because platforms refuse to sell your data in their ad exchanges, but because all dApps are inherently designed that way.”
To enhance the mobile application experience, Solana has decided to go all the way into hardware—partnering with OSOMPrivacy to build an Android smartphone called Saga, pre-installed with the Solana Mobile Stack, scheduled to ship in early 2023.
The phone is now open for pre-orders (pre-order at: https://store.solanamobile.com/) with a $100 deposit, though Saga will initially only be available in the United States, Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom.
To foster a mobile ecosystem, the Solana Foundation has launched a $10 million fund to encourage growth in mobile dApps, and the SDK is already available.
At the 2021 Multicoin Capital Summit, founding partner Kyle Samani described Solana as Crypto’s "iPhone moment".
The iPhone fundamentally transformed society. It opened up a design space for developers to build applications for mainstream users, giving rise to mass-market mobile apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, Uber, WhatsApp, and more. We believe Solana represents Crypto’s "iPhone moment." Solana provides entrepreneurs with a design space for crypto innovation, moving the stack upward toward more user-facing, real-world applications.
How can crypto or Web3 break into the mainstream? Creating killer applications remains a long-standing topic in the industry. Drawing from internet history, the shift from PC to mobile gave birth to super apps like TikTok, Instagram, WhatsApp, and WeChat—spawning some of the most valuable tech companies in the world today...
Will Web3 now enter its mobile era, birthing another wave of world-changing applications?
Solana has taken the first bite—but first, it needs to fully resolve its downtime issues. After all, a non-down Solana runs pretty smoothly.
