The "code maniac" behind Solana's upgrades leaves to launch a startup, aiming to disrupt the old world with a high-performance L1
Restructure the architecture, rebuild the virtual machine, and reestablish consensus.

This morning, a major personnel change sent shockwaves through the Solana community.
In the early hours, Solana core developer Cantelopepeel announced his departure from Firedancer, Solana’s client team, to found Unto Labs. Cantelopepeel stated that Unto Labs will build a next-generation Layer1 blockchain "built for performance, without compromise."

Who is Cantelopepeel?
Cantelopepeel is better known on GitHub as Liam.
He has played a pivotal role in the development and upgrades of the Solana ecosystem. Over the past two years, Cantelopepeel led the development of Firedancer, one of Solana's most anticipated clients.
At Breakpoint 2024, Cantelopepeel demonstrated Firedancer’s capabilities, showing it could process 1 million TPS, handle 1 billion compute units per second, and utilize up to 1 Gbps of block space within a global private cluster.

In today’s announcement, Cantelopepeel described Firedancer as currently the highest-performing open-source blockchain client—an excellent foundation for building high-performance applications, whether on-chain or off—and expressed pride in his contributions.
Yet, he emphasized, this still isn’t enough.
Goal: A New-Generation Blockchain
According to Cantelopepeel, as user scale grows, real-world user activity on blockchains becomes far more complex than testbed demonstrations suggest. Existing blockchains struggle to meet the real-world demands of users and applications—so something entirely new must be built to address these needs.
Cantelopepeel believes that generational improvements in performance and user experience require an entirely fresh approach. To achieve this, he will leverage unproven, novel ideas in an attempt to construct the "best Layer1."
He clarified that this does not mean creating another SVM network, but rather re-architecting everything: rebuilding the virtual machine, consensus mechanism, and all layers between them—all aimed at one goal: providing more room for users and applications.

On the newly launched official social media page of Unto Labs, a single phrase captures Cantelopepeel’s vision: "Building global distributed systems at the edge of reality."
Madman or Genius?
Cantelopepeel’s departure and new venture have sparked widespread discussion within the Solana ecosystem.
Max Resnick, chief economist at Anza—the team responsible for maintaining the Solana network—posted on X expressing excitement to see what Cantelopepeel will build next.
Uma Roy, a developer at Succinct, commented: "Liam once showed me code he wrote for Firedancer—it was unbelievable. This guy is insane! I’m genuinely excited about what he’s going to create next."

Market Implications
Following Cantelopepeel’s move, the market is focused on two key questions: What impact will this have on Solana? And how soon can one get involved with Unto Labs?
Regarding the first question, there’s little cause for concern. While Cantelopepeel’s departure may cause some disruption, Firedancer’s development is already nearing completion. Earlier this month, reports emerged that the Solana Foundation is accelerating its testing of Firedancer. Therefore, Cantelopepeel’s exit is unlikely to significantly delay Firedancer’s official launch.
As for the second question, Unto Labs remains in its earliest stages. As Cantelopepeel himself put it, they are exploring "some untested, novel ideas." There is currently no product available for use, so interested parties should simply monitor developments for now. However, Cantelopepeel mentioned that Unto Labs has begun hiring. Odaily Planet Daily found only two open engineering positions listed, both based in San Francisco—developers with the opportunity and interest may want to apply.
