From the anonymous authors of The Federalist Papers laying the foundation for democratic debate, to whistleblowers like WikiLeaks exposing global injustices, the practice of pseudonymity has allowed people to freely share ideas and truths without fear of retaliation. Throughout history, figures such as Voltaire, Publius, Mark Twain (real name Samuel Clemens), George Eliot (real name Mary Ann Evans), and Satoshi Nakamoto have all advanced the spread of ideas through the use of pseudonyms.

Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Proofs
Zero-knowledge proofs are a revolutionary cryptographic technology that allows one party to prove to another that they know certain information—without revealing the information itself. For example, you could prove you meet the age requirement to enter a venue without showing your full ID details. This technology verifies key facts (like age) while protecting other private data.
On traditional platforms, users typically submit personal data that is centrally stored on servers, creating risks of leaks or misuse. Zero-knowledge proofs change this model by enabling users to verify credentials or ownership without exposing personal information—significantly enhancing privacy protection.

Genesis
Sealcaster, developed by Big Whale Labs, is the first zero-knowledge application built on the Farcaster protocol. The team includes Nikita Kolmogorov (borodutch), Jason Kim, and others. They use Circom—a programming language designed specifically for zero-knowledge circuits—to generate proofs, allowing users to complete identity verification without revealing personal information. Through Circom’s constraint and signal mechanisms, Sealcaster can verify the authenticity of user credentials while preserving privacy.

Sealcaster is one of several zero-knowledge products launched by Big Whale Labs, including:
-
SealCred: A platform enabling users to mint zk-NFTs based on NFT and email ownership.
-
SealCred Echo: A tool that lets users anonymously post content on Twitter with verifiable credentials attached.
-
Ketl: A tool providing pseudonymous communication between venture capitalists and founders.
As one of the first practical zero-knowledge applications on the Farcaster protocol, Sealcaster demonstrates the vast potential of privacy-preserving and verifiable communication on decentralized platforms.

Superanon
As the Farcaster community evolved, a premium user client called supercast (developed by its founder woj, later renamed super) began building a user base, eventually giving rise to superanon.

Supercast is currently a paid client primarily aimed at advanced users. It supports posting from multiple accounts and enables users to operate anonymously via superanon.

ANON
Within the Farcaster community, CLANKER—an AI-powered token launcher—has already facilitated the creation of over 10,000 tokens, with a cumulative trading volume of $1 billion and millions of dollars paid to creators. One day, a superanon user anonymously created a token named $ANON using CLANKER while woj was asleep, exemplifying permissionless operation.

When woj woke up, he officially launched the $anon token (lowercase), positioning it as a support tool for superanon accounts, and distributed donated $ANON tokens via airdrop to all supercast users.

Later, developer slokh—previously known for building the nook client—created anoncast.org, a platform allowing users to post content anonymously if they hold $ANON.

The platform combines Noir and Rust technologies. Its open-source code has attracted many developers to iterate and experiment, opening new possibilities for the future of anonymous social networks.

Beyond continuous feature updates and optimizations—such as allowing users to later reveal themselves as the author of a popular post—Farcaster's functionality has attracted many notable users, including Vitalik and Jesse Pollack. Notably, 0xLuo is the creator of the right-side feature.

33Bits
33bits.xyz is an experimental platform accessible only to users with FID numbers below 20,000—early adopters of Farcaster. The tool was built by developers Kugusha and Sergey. To expand access, they later launched 66bits.xyz, which not only opens usage to more users but also adds extra features for token holders.

Rumours
rumourcast.xyz, developed by Disky and Leovido, is a Farcaster-based client. Building upon the popular Anon Cast, it introduces several unique innovations.

Users who hold sufficient supporting tokens can post content under anonymous accounts. Future development plans include:
-
Frames V2 Integration: Enhancing user interaction through unique frame functionalities.
-
NFT Minting: Enabling rumors to be minted as collectible NFTs, potentially integrated with prediction markets to add interactivity and value.
-
Rumour AI Agent: Using AI to expand and refine rumor content, adding depth and creativity to each post.

These iterations are ongoing, and the future holds great promise.

Pseudonymous Economy
A full shift toward a completely financialized pseudonymous framework may overlook the complexity of human social interactions. However, the real potential lies not in absolute anonymity, but in building diverse and complex identity models.

These online and on-chain social experiments offer users a unique space where individuals can build reputation, share insights, and collaborate without revealing their real identities—reducing the pressure associated with personal information exposure.

While fully anonymous systems struggle to support complex social or governance structures, these verified digital identity models open new possibilities. Identities can be both trustworthy and portable across platforms, while preserving personal privacy. They pave the way for voluntary participation and fluid identities in online communities, redefining the power dynamics of digital communication.
Through these tools, we can better strike a delicate balance between transparency and privacy protection, collective trust and individual freedom.
