Step-by-step guide to experiencing Coinbase AI Agent Based Agent
Has the era of on-chain AI interaction arrived?
By Karen, Foresight News
Last week, Coinbase launched Based Agent, an AI-powered on-chain interaction agent. Based Agent is an AI-driven autonomous agent that interacts with the Base L2 network via the Coinbase Developer Platform (CDP), OpenAI's official multi-agent collaboration framework Swarm, enabling on-chain operations such as token creation, NFT deployment, and asset transfers.
Based Agent offers a simple setup within the online coding environment Replit, allowing users to explore autonomous blockchain interactions without manual coding, including autonomous execution, token deployment, NFT deployment, asset transfers, balance checks, ETH faucet requests, and generating artwork via DALL-E (AI-generated art).
So how does Based Agent perform in practice? Today, Foresight News will walk you through experiencing Based Agent step by step.
Before getting started, please ensure you have completed the following preparations:
1. Create an API key and secret key at https://portal.cdp.coinbase.com/ — Chinese phone numbers are supported;
2. Create an OpenAI API Key at https://platform.openai.com/api-keys;
3. Log in to https://replit.com/.
Next, follow these steps:
1. Use the Based Agent template on Replit (https://replit.com/@KevinLeffew1/Based-Agent?v=1#run.py): Click "Use Template" in the top right corner;
2. In the "Secrets" section at the top right, add your OpenAI API Key, Coinbase CDP API key name, and private key (note: copy both the Coinbase CDP API key and private key exactly as they appear);
3. After setup, click "Run" at the top. Each time you click "Run," a new agent wallet address (on Base) will be generated and automatically receive 0.01 ETH from the faucet (on Base Sepolia);
4. Once the program runs, you can choose one of three modes: chat, auto (autonomous interaction), or AI-to-agent dialogue mode.
In chat mode, you can communicate using natural language—for example, instructing the AI agent to mint an NFT collection or swap tokens. However, since the agent currently only supports the Base Sepolia network, several actions I attempted could not be completed.

Additionally, it currently appears impossible to switch directly between modes. To change modes, first click "Stop" to halt the current process, then click "Run" again to restart the program, which generates a new agent wallet. In autonomous mode, the AI agent independently performs a series of actions, such as deploying an NFT collection, claiming ETH testnet tokens from a faucet, minting NFTs, creating tokens, and registering domains.

As for the third mode, it frequently gives irrelevant responses. I personally found it confusing, and the official team has yet to provide a clear explanation.

According to Lincoln, a member of the Coinbase Developer Platform team, this agent can currently also be configured as an X (Twitter) bot.
Although Coinbase’s AI agent, Based Agent, currently exists only as a template on Replit and its autonomous transaction mode seems limited to randomly attempting all possible operations, imagine if future iterations deeply integrate autonomous execution with explicit intent recognition—ultimately giving rise to a smarter, more perceptive AI agent with advanced analytical capabilities. That would undoubtedly be a compelling vision for the future.
