Sun Yuchen: Traffic, Controversy, and Libertarianism
Now 34 years old, he remains at the forefront of the cryptocurrency world, chasing the next wave.
Two months ago, Sun Yucheng celebrated his 34th birthday.
Before turning 30, his光环 came from a long list of dazzling titles: Peking University graduate, cover figure of Asia Weekly, Ivy League alumnus (University of Pennsylvania), World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and the only post-90s member in Jack Ma’s Hupan School inaugural class…
He started his entrepreneurial journey at age 22 while studying abroad. At 24, he returned to China as Ripple Labs’ chief representative for Greater China and founded Rainberry Inc., serving as CEO. At 25, he was named “China Internet Annual Rising Star” by CNTV. At 27, he launched the blockchain platform TRON and was included in Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia list. At 29, he purchased the Warren Buffett charity lunch…
Yet alongside these shining achievements, he has remained at the center of public controversy. Media outlets and industry insiders have raised numerous concerns over his bold business tactics, frequent self-promotion, and project compliance. Some praise him for pioneering spirit, while others criticize him for being overly flamboyant—but he appears indifferent to external opinions, whether positive or negative.
You’ll find that every controversy, every headline, becomes part of how he shapes his personal brand.
Nine years ago, in an interview published by The Paper in 2015, the journalist wrote: “At 25, Sun Yucheng is undoubtedly a standout among post-90s entrepreneurs—simultaneously brilliant and controversial. Criticisms mainly focus on the abrupt shifts in his life trajectory and his almost obsessive passion since diving into entrepreneurship.”
Today, 34-year-old Sun Yucheng remains active at the forefront of the blockchain industry, with every move made under the spotlight and closely watched. This near-obsessive drive acts like an invisible hand pushing him forward.

Sun Yucheng, the "Prime Minister" of Liberland
Recently, Sun Yucheng received a new title—the “Prime Minister” Sun Yucheng.
On October 10, according to a document disclosed by X (formerly Twitter) blogger @tier10k, the unrecognized micronation Liberland announced the results of its latest parliamentary election. Sun Yucheng won the election and was nominated as acting Prime Minister by Liberland's President Vit Jedlička.

On October 11, Sun Yucheng confirmed on social media his appointment as Prime Minister of Liberland.

An official statement from Liberland said the vote count was completed at 5 a.m. Central European Time on October 6, marking the first full deployment of the country’s blockchain-based voting system. The election process used simple rule sets and was fully algorithmic, designed to ensure transparency and eliminate disputes over results.
What is Liberland?
According to Wikipedia, Liberland, officially the Free Republic of Liberland, literally meaning “free land,” is a private nation founded on April 13, 2015, by Czech politician Vit Jedlička. It claims sovereignty over a piece of territory called Gornja Siga, located on the western bank of the Danube River at the border between Serbia and Croatia.

Sun Yucheng stated that Liberland is not just a country but also a manifestation of a political philosophy advocating freedom, minimal government intervention, and individual autonomy.
Sun Yucheng envisions Liberland becoming a global symbol of libertarian ideals, likening it to a spiritual homeland for libertarians. He emphasized that Liberland is the first nation whose relationship with citizens is based on shared principles and values rather than blood ties or geographical boundaries—everything built upon voluntary participation and mutual respect.
He aims to actively promote small-government ideals, not only within Liberland but also as a model for the world. He believes Liberland’s success could inspire other nations to embrace liberal principles, demonstrating that minimal government can bring stability and prosperity without excessive regulation or coercion.

This latest appointment inevitably recalls Sun Yucheng’s role in 2021 as Grenada’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Sun Yucheng’s actions continue to be full of surprises, often challenging conventional perceptions of entrepreneurs. His frequent cross-boundary moves and bold initiatives not only astonish the public but also spark mockery and heated discussions.
As someone jokingly put it: “Brother Sun is up to his antics again.”

Sun Yucheng Under Scrutiny
Whether elected Prime Minister of Liberland or frequently making headlines in the cryptocurrency world and global politics, each move triggers extensive discussion and controversy.
Supporters believe he breaks traditional rules and boundaries, promoting the integration of liberalism and innovation. Critics argue he is an opportunist who manipulates traffic and operates on the edge of regulations.
Challenging norms seems to be his usual path, and it is precisely this continuous defiance of traditional authority and institutions that keeps him constantly under scrutiny. People naturally wonder: Is he truly fighting for freedom, or accumulating more capital and influence for himself?
Sometimes the media portrays him through a single lens, simplifying his statements and behaviors. This one-dimensional perspective not only affects the public’s comprehensive understanding of him but also makes discussions superficial, failing to deeply explore his impact in the industry.

We pay attention to his achievements while questioning his motives. For someone who continuously challenges traditional authorities and systems, people naturally want to know—what is his ultimate goal?
Sun Yucheng’s career can be seen as an ongoing game; his attempts and explorations across different fields actually reveal the challenges faced by a post-90s entrepreneur.
Thus, Sun Yucheng is not only a public figure under constant examination but also an individual struggling between self-expression and public expectations. To truly understand a person requires deeper insight—going beyond simplistic labels and biases to grasp his complexity.
I’d like to use some interesting angles to unpack other dimensions of Sun Yucheng.
Sun Yucheng, the Introvert
Over the years, Sun Yucheng hasn’t changed much in appearance. In formal settings, he always wears a suit, often hiding a logo-printed T-shirt underneath, paired with clean white Nike sneakers and casual dress pants.

Those outside his circle may want to understand him, while those inside seem to already know him well.
Many may not realize that despite appearing confident and in control, he is actually a classic “I” type—introverted.
Sun Yucheng has taken personality tests and identifies as a standard INTP—known as the Logician personality type.
INTP is one of the 16 personality types in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Known for calmness and rationality, INTPs enjoy digging into the core of problems, pursuing depth over surface-level understanding.
Who are famous logicians? Bill Gates and Einstein are both INTPs—individuals whose minds leap ahead, spotting logical patterns invisible to most.

INTPs live in their own world, following internal logic to make sense of everything.
Though highly introverted, Sun Yucheng shows exceptional sensitivity and interest in emerging trends, especially in blockchain technology.
Liu Yego (“Sixth Master”), spokesperson for Huobi HTX, revealed: “Someone like Sun Yucheng—an elite-level INTP—often possesses awareness far ahead of others. He consistently steps outside conventional thinking to spot future trends most people overlook. His sensitivity and judgment regarding emerging technologies, particularly blockchain and innovation, are exceptionally high.”
From a personality standpoint, Sun Yucheng truly embodies someone unafraid to break conventions and brimming with curiosity.
Take HTX DAO as an example. Sixth Master told me Sun genuinely wants to achieve decentralized governance through the platform. Even when some managers initially didn’t understand his decisions, they eventually proved successful.
In Sun Yucheng’s view, HTX DAO and the company’s growth are tightly linked. By successfully operating the Huobi HTX platform, the value of $HTX will rise accordingly—just like a company’s stock increases with performance.
Like other INTPs, however, his independent thinking and unconventional decision-making often invite skepticism and confusion. Yet Sun Yucheng typically ignores such voices—because in his world, he already has his own answers.
Sun Yucheng, the Workaholic
Last month, the community spontaneously began praising Sun Yucheng as a “workhorse” in the Web3 space—a true builder.
You’ll notice Sun Yucheng has been active in the blockchain industry for over a decade.
Many of his peers have either stepped back or retired to travel the world.
Recently, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin became a topic due to his romantic relationship, while single Sun Yucheng became another hot subject in the community.
Sun Yucheng once mentioned in a talk that he hardly takes holidays—whether weekdays or weekends, he remains on call 24/7.
In a podcast titled “Speak Up” in May this year, the host asked: “What’s your philosophy toward work and life?”
Sun Yucheng replied: “Everything can give way to work. At this stage, work is the only thing that matters—everything else can be sacrificed. I’m like a professional athlete, training daily to maintain peak condition.”
Many wonder if he ever sleeps, given his endless energy, constant presence on social media, and lightning-fast reactions to trending topics.
In that podcast, he said he somewhat wishes to be like artificial intelligence or a robot—minimizing emotional fluctuations.
“Running companies is my only hobby.”
He has immense passion for entrepreneurship and business, dedicating virtually all his time and energy to it.

As a result, externally, Sun Yucheng’s persona seems less flamboyant.
He now focuses solely on doing what needs to be done—making TRON more “popular” and leading Huobi HTX to “reclaim its place among the top three.”
When Sun Yucheng attended Huobi HTX’s 11th anniversary events in August, he shared his vision for the exchange. He believes that operating successfully for 11 years is itself an achievement. Then he went into full monologue mode:
“Jack Ma said most Japanese companies have century-long histories—we also aspire to build a century-old institution. Though extremely difficult in finance, we’ll keep striving. In Web3, very few companies last 11 years, but Huobi HTX did. Over the past 11 years, our industry has grown tremendously. In crypto, anything is possible. Whether interpreted positively or negatively, there’s truth to that. Crypto has advanced far beyond traditional industries.”
Sun Yucheng, the Exception Who Was Mocked Into Fame
Later you’ll realize, many in crypto mock Sun Yucheng—yet end up making him the exception.
Initially, people focused on what Sun Yucheng bought or sold, speculating whether “Brother Sun” would dump the market. Over time, this attention evolved into an unofficial “wealth code” within the community. Sun Yucheng’s investment moves, especially his timing of purchases, became key indicators for many investors assessing market trends.
Eventually, people realized Brother Sun’s wallet address had become a “smart money” address. Though occasionally he “crashes” (like getting stuck buying the bottom of Ethereum), community feedback suggests his trading win rate remains impressively high.
Hence the popular saying in the community: “You can say Brother Sun is shady, but you can’t say he’s bad at this.”
Sometimes Sun Yucheng sees himself as an attacker, striking decisively at critical moments—much like AC Milan’s offensive style, which he admires. But he also understands defense—like Maldini’s calm precision as a defender. When facing criticism and challenges, Sun Yucheng often uniquely deflects attacks and withstands external pressure.
His earlier style of unreserved self-expression has gradually faded, replaced by a more reserved and cautious attitude.
This shift reflects not only his sensitivity to public opinion but also his growing awareness of weighing consequences in a rapidly changing industry.
These transformations are both contrasting and complementary.
The tides of the era combined with Sun Yucheng’s capabilities have shaped his current status.
His controversial nature may stem precisely from being ahead of the curve, while his success comes from innovating and seizing opportunities in fast-changing markets.

Sun Yucheng, the Underdog
In his youth, Sun Yucheng enjoyed reading Wang Xiaobo and Li Ao—Wang’s humor and depth, Li’s sharpness and outspokenness, deeply influenced young Sun.
In his essay “A Singular Pig,” Wang Xiaobo reminisces about a free-spirited pig that leaps fences like a goat, climbs roofs like a cat, refuses castration, and escapes human encirclement.
“A singular pig” remains a spiritual icon of this era.
Twenty years after Wang Xiaobo’s passing, people still seem unable to escape the fate of “accepting a preset life with complacency,” living a “slowly hammered” existence,
Yet Sun Yucheng decided early on that he wanted to “escape” such a life.
In 2007, Sun Yucheng took the college entrance exam in Guangdong, where competition was fierce—700,000 candidates, with only 20 spots for Peking University’s liberal arts program. He scored 650 points.
Before the exam, Sun listed Peking University’s Yuanpei Program as his first choice and Peking University’s Department of Chinese Language and Literature as second—and was ultimately admitted to the latter.
Sun himself admitted that his academic performance in junior high was poor. During senior year, he spent one year improving, plus bonus points from a creative writing contest, rising from a third-tier university prospect to admission at Peking University.
While Wang Xiaobo explored individual loneliness and rebellion in society, Sun Yucheng’s nonconformity lies in choosing a different path in a world obsessed with conformity and standardization.
His personality is “extremely nonconformist”—in entrepreneurship, he uses unique methods to gain attention and resources. This style is reflected not only in his business strategies but also in how he crafts his public image.
However, nonconformity isn’t always smooth sailing—it brings attention and resources, but also skepticism and criticism.
Through continuous reflection and adjustment, perhaps Sun Yucheng is seeking resonance with the spirit conveyed by Wang Xiaobo’s singular pig—persisting in oneself and courageously pursuing one’s own path, even in adversity.
Sun Yucheng, the “Ordinary Person”
Stripped of all identities, sometimes Sun Yucheng is just an ordinary post-90s.
He enjoys new things, watches sports games, Taylor Swift concerts, and F1 races. Even shares tweets from number bloggers just to “gossip.”
Sometimes Sun Yucheng is undeniably a chatterbox.
People who’ve interacted with him say his range of topics is astonishing—he can talk endlessly about anything.
In short videos on his social platforms, he talks about “marriage”—a man who rarely dates giving eloquent advice on marriage.
He shares WEB3 “meme coin” rap songs—maybe practices freestyle alone at home.
He still loves “pulling stunts”—wherever there’s action, he’ll show up.

Sun Yucheng and the Cryptocurrency Wave
At the beginning of this article, we described Sun Yucheng’s passionate vision for Liberland.
He hopes to turn it into a spiritual home for libertarians, much like Vatican City for Catholics. Sun Yucheng explained: “Libertarians around the world may hold different nationalities, but Liberland will become their ideological homeland—a place that respects freedom, self-governance, and voluntary civic participation.”
Back in the turbulent currents of blockchain and crypto, his very existence is filled with contradictions and conflicts. These controversies and praises seem to have become mere backdrop to his life’s stage.
Does Sun Yucheng truly care about these evaluations? When wealth flows in like a tide, perhaps public opinion and external judgment have already become “background noise”—no longer impactful.

In Wang Xiaobo’s classic novel *The Golden Age*, he wrote: “That day I turned twenty-one. In my golden age, I had many desires. I wanted to love, to eat, and in an instant become a partly bright, partly dark cloud in the sky. Later I realized life is a slow hammering process. Day by day, we grow older, our desires fade, until we become like oxen beaten senseless. I feel I’ll stay fierce forever—nothing can hammer me.”
But as time passes, people gradually understand—as Wang Xiaobo said—life is indeed a “slow hammering process.” Dreams and aspirations get shattered by reality, eventually turning heavy and sluggish like an ox.
If Sun Yucheng could go back to age 22, would he still choose to dive into entrepreneurship and wholeheartedly ride the wave of cryptocurrency?
Would he still maintain that initial passion and fierceness in the face of endless challenges and controversies, charging forward fearlessly as he once did?
Just like the blockchain world itself—filled with uncertainty—34-year-old Sun Yucheng remains at the forefront of the crypto frontier, chasing the next wave.
