Priced at $599, is the SuiPlay gaming handheld worth buying?
The first 1000 pre-order customers will receive a special NFT, fewer than 100 remain.
By Alex Liu, Foresight News

Blockchain projects launching hardware products—either independently or through partnerships—has become increasingly common in today’s Web3 industry. Token airdrops have proven especially effective as an incentive strategy—perhaps the real reason people buy a "Web3 phone" isn’t the device itself, but the potential token airdrop behind it.
In this context, Mysten Labs (the team behind the Sui blockchain) and gaming startup Playtron have partnered to launch a handheld gaming console called the SuiPlay0x1. Pre-orders are now open, and the first 1,000 pre-order customers will receive a special soulbound NFT granting exclusive access rights, rewards, and benefits.
Is it worth buying?
Setting aside airdrop speculation, let's first examine the gaming console itself.
Price and Specifications
Priced at $599, it can be purchased using SUI, SOL, or ETH.
Bottom line: ignoring all Web3 and cryptocurrency aspects, the hardware specs and pricing of the SuiPlay are “decent.”

This level of hardware and pricing is roughly on par with entry-level flagship handheld consoles from about a year ago (by release time, nearly two years outdated). Compared to other Web3 hardware devices that are often three to five years behind in performance (e.g., Saga, Jambo, CoralApp...), this marks notable progress. (For reference: the AYANEO 2s 7840U model released last year had nearly identical specs and launched at 4,699 RMB.)
Playtron OS
Playtron, the company partnering with Mysten Labs on the Play0X1, is a developer focused on gaming handheld operating systems. The SuiPlay0X1 will be its first hardware product.
Founded by Kirt McMaster, former CEO of Cyanogen (a well-known third-party Android ROM), Playtron developed Playtron OS—a Linux-based system like SteamOS, supporting both x86 and ARM platforms. Notably, AYANEO, a major Chinese handheld manufacturer, is expected to release a device running Playtron OS by the end of this year.
The SuiPlay0X1 will run on Playtron OS and is the first handheld gaming device integrated with the Sui blockchain, natively supporting Sui games as well as libraries from Steam and Epic Games.

PlaytronOS supports game platforms including Steam, Epic, and GOG
Blockchain Gaming Ecosystem
The SuiPlay0X1 will also serve as a primary platform for Sui-based blockchain games, such as Xociety (a popular shooter blending RPG elements, dynamic PvP, and immersive PvE experiences) and DarkTimes (a free-to-play medieval battle royale inspired by Nordic aesthetics, featuring a physics-based combat system).
Playing these blockchain games on the SuiPlay0X1 may come with certain perks—possibly including token airdrops.
Potential Airdrops
When it comes to Web3 devices, everyone’s real interest lies in airdrops.

The first 1,000 pre-order customers of SuiPlay will receive a special soulbound NFT, which the official team says grants exclusive access rights, rewards, and benefits. This strategy clearly mirrors that of the Solana Saga phone. However, whether this will spark a similar airdrop frenzy remains to be seen—and depends heavily on whether ecosystem projects align with the official roadmap.
Compared to the Solana Saga Gen 1, which originally sold for 1,000 USD before price cuts and had thousands of units produced, the SuiPlay’s $599 price tag and limited run of just 1,000 NFTs suggest a potentially favorable return on investment. Early Solana Saga owners received thousands of dollars in tokens; for SuiPlay NFT holders to break even, they’d only need a total airdrop value of $600,000 across the entire cohort.

And even if no airdrops materialize, you’ll still get a handheld gaming console by mid-next year—worth around 3,000–4,000 RMB based on current market prices for similar configurations.
Airdrops might not guarantee ROI, but the games might bring you joy.
Note: At the time of writing, the author convinced a colleague to purchase one—their NFT number is 907.
