This week, some Binance fans shared their excitement on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that exchange founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ) would complete his imprisonment on August 30. However, a quick fact check reveals that he will not actually be released on that date.
On April 30, U.S. District Judge Richard Jones sentenced CZ to four months in prison at a facility in Seattle and recommended placement at Seatac, a federal detention center with prison and administrative security.
Many observers apparently assumed CZ entered Seatac on the same day, making August 30 his release date. However, CZ’s legal team from prominent law firms Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, Davis Wright Tremaine, and Latham & Watkins successfully secured several additional weeks of freedom for him.

An example of misinformation circulating on Crypto Twitter:
Pahueg: @cz_binance was sentenced to four months in prison on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
If he began serving his sentence immediately, his release deadline would be August 30, 2024.
As of May 16, CZ had still not entered custody at the Bureau of Prisons facility. It wasn’t until several days later that CZ, his lawyers, and the Probation and Pretrial Services Office finalized a later surrender date.
Current checks of the Bureau of Prisons database also show that CZ is not at Seatac but is instead held at FCI Lompoc II, a low-security federal prison located three hours north of Los Angeles.
When Will CZ Be Released?
Unless circumstances change, CZ will not leave FCI Lompoc II on August 30. Instead, his current scheduled release date is September 29.

As reported by Protos last month, the Fifth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees due process rights to all individuals within the United States, including non-citizens like CZ. These protections include all the specific circumstances surrounding CZ’s incarceration—such as his nearly one-month delay between sentencing and surrender, his placement in a lower-security facility outside Seatac, and earlier procedural delays in court proceedings.
