Elon Musk makes another appearance, swapping in laser eyes after a three-year hiatus
Another viral meme emerges amid the election—recharging bullish faith?

As the U.S. election unfolds, new viral memes continue to emerge.
Early this morning Beijing time, U.S. President Joe Biden announced on social media that he would withdraw from the 2024 U.S. presidential race and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's nominee. Following the announcement, meme coins such as $HERRIS, $KAMALA, and $KAMA surged sharply, quickly drawing attention from the crypto community.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk—widely followed in the crypto space and a known supporter of Trump—also made a move, triggering a short-term surge of over 50x in a pro-Trump election-themed meme coin called "DMAGA."
Midnight profile picture change sparks 50x meme coin rally
In recent days, Musk has frequently shared political content related to the U.S. election on his X (formerly Twitter) account, openly supporting Donald Trump’s campaign. Early this morning, a user @Chriswinig commented under Musk’s post about New York’s 11% rise in crime rates with the words: "It's time!" and attached an image of Musk’s original profile picture enhanced with laser eyes—a so-called “Dark Mask” look.
The image was generated by a website named DarkMagacoin. This site emerged after the Trump assassination attempt, leveraging the iconic image of Trump raising his fist. Promoted with the slogan “Dark MAGA patriots take control,” it allows fans to create their own versions of dark-themed images featuring laser eyes.
Crucially, the website also launched a meme coin called $DMAGA. However, prior to Musk changing his profile picture, $DMAGA had less than $2 million in trading volume one week after launch.

This morning, news of Biden dropping out of the U.S. election reignited excitement among Trump supporters. Musk changed his profile picture to the same laser-eye image, widely interpreted as a bold celebration of Biden’s withdrawal.

Soon after, members of the crypto community noticed that Marc Andreessen, founder of a16z, and Ryan Selkis, founder of Messari, had also adopted the same laser-eye profile pictures as symbols of support for Trump.

With Musk effectively endorsing the trend, DMAGA began surging overnight, increasing more than 50x within hours. At the time of writing, its market cap has surpassed $60 million.

Musk wore laser eyes during the bull run three years ago
In fact, “laser eyes” hold special significance in the crypto community, symbolizing unwavering faith in Bitcoin.
In early 2021, at the start of the previous bull market, Bitcoin rose from around $29,000 to $56,000. Amid growing bullish sentiment, crypto podcaster Greg Zaj launched a campaign on Twitter called “#LaserRayUntil100K,” expressing belief that Bitcoin would soon surpass $100,000.
The term “laser eyes” originates from video games, where characters’ eyes glow yellow when possessed. In the crypto world, users adopt the laser-eye avatar to signal their strong conviction in Bitcoin. Back then, figures like Michael Saylor, CEO of MicroStrategy; Meltem Demirors, CEO of CoinShares; and even U.S. Senator Cynthia Lummis joined the movement.
But the most influential participant was Musk. On February 20, 2021, he suddenly changed his profile picture to a young girl with laser eyes against a Bitcoin background. His move turned Twitter into a sea of laser-eyed avatars almost overnight.

Interestingly, Bitcoin has now climbed back to $68,000, making the three-year-old vision of “#LaserRayUntil100K” just as relevant today as it was back then.
