Coinbase Smart Wallet ushers in a new chapter for Coinbase Wallet, simplifying the blockchain user experience and revolutionizing on-chain interactions by streamlining onboarding, eliminating network fees, and removing recovery phrases. It offers seamless gasless transactions and cross-app portability, aiming to bring over one billion users onto the blockchain.
At Coinbase, we've always envisioned a future where everyone can seamlessly participate in the blockchain world. Today, we're launching a major upgrade to our self-custody wallet. Smart Wallet represents a critical breakthrough toward our goal of bringing over one billion users on-chain. These next-generation wallets solve the biggest pain points of today's crypto experience—complex onboarding, network fees, and recovery phrases—making the transition to blockchain smoother than ever before.
Smart Wallet delivers a simple, gasless on-chain experience. This simplicity, combined with multi-chain support and integration with major applications, makes using blockchain as easy as logging into your favorite website. Until now, going on-chain has typically been slow, expensive, and difficult, requiring separate wallet apps and first-generation blockchain technology. The ease of use of Smart Wallet, paired with next-generation Layer 2 networks like Base, finally lays the foundation for broader adoption. Now, going on-chain is simple, fast, and affordable.
For existing Coinbase Wallet users, we will roll out migration tools within the Coinbase Wallet app over the coming months to support Smart Wallet.
Smart Wallet makes going on-chain simple
Smart Wallet allows users to create a free, secure, self-custodied wallet in seconds. It streamlines onboarding, reduces the number of required transaction signatures, and enables seamless use of Coinbase balances to go on-chain. No more needing to top up gas or carry wallets across apps. With Smart Wallet, new users can mint NFTs, trade on decentralized exchanges, or diversify investments via DeFi apps—all within a few clicks. Users enjoy a smooth and intuitive experience without sacrificing self-custody or security.

Easy onboarding: Create a new wallet and get started in seconds—no need to leave the app you’re using or deal with recovery phrases, standalone apps, or browser extensions. Instantly begin with facial recognition, Google Chrome profile, fingerprint, or Yubikey.

Seamless on-chain payments: Pay using your self-custodied wallet balance or Coinbase account balance—never see an “insufficient funds” error again.

Cross-app portability: Bring your wallet, identity, and balances to thousands of popular on-chain applications.

Gasless transactions: Developers can offer gasless experiences by sponsoring transactions through paymaster integrations.
Additionally, Coinbase provides a companion web app featuring asset and identity management, buying, sending, swapping, NFTs, and transaction history, which will serve as the primary platform for Smart Wallet users to manage their wallets.
At launch, Smart Wallet supports most leading on-chain applications, with plans to expand further. It will initially support eight networks (Base, Ethereum, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, BNB, Zora), with additional networks planned in the future.
Developers: Integrate Smart Wallet into your app to accelerate onboarding
Currently, on-chain app developers lose many new users when they have to leave the app to install and fund a separate wallet. Smart Wallet is accessible directly through any browser, eliminating the need for app or extension installations. Other key improvements include gas sponsorship via paymasters, batched transactions, and direct payment using Coinbase accounts. We are pioneering new industry standards that enable direct communication between apps and wallets, facilitate paymaster usage, and support API-free batch transactions (EIP-5792). We expect this powerful suite of features to significantly boost conversion rates.
Coinbase Smart Wallet is live now, and we encourage developers to integrate or update their SDK today to deliver superior on-chain experiences. Integration is extremely simple—requiring as little as a few lines of code. Smart Wallet is already integrated into all major wallet libraries and aggregators, including WAGMI, Web3Modal, Privy, Dynamic, and Rainbowkit. Developers can update their existing Coinbase Wallet SDK for minimal disruption and a smooth transition.
