In less than a year, Sui, the Layer 1 blockchain launched by the Mysten Labs team, has rapidly risen to prominence, successfully entering the top ten in decentralized finance (DeFi). According to data from DeFi Llama, Sui's total value locked (TVL) grew over 1000% within just four months, surpassing many established projects. Currently, the Sui ecosystem hosts 22 DeFi protocols, two of which have TVL exceeding $100 million, and another four surpassing $40 million.

Current State of the Sui Ecosystem
Key Metrics and Network Performance
Since its mainnet launch in 2023, the development speed of the Sui ecosystem has been remarkable. As of May 2024, there are over 500 active nodes on the Sui network, distributed globally to ensure decentralization and high availability. Over this period, the Sui network has experienced zero downtime or performance degradation, achieving several notable technical milestones. For example, transaction finality takes only 400 milliseconds, peak throughput under controlled conditions reached 297,000 transactions per second, and daily transaction volume peaked at 65.8 million.
Moreover, Sui maintains robust daily transaction volumes. Since May, the Sui network has processed over 309 million transactions, with an average of over 100,000 active wallets participating daily. Thanks to its unique object-centric model and parallel processing architecture, Sui can handle over 100,000 transactions per second, significantly outperforming traditional blockchains. This high-efficiency transaction processing not only delivers a smoother user experience but also attracts more developers and projects to build on Sui.
Move 2024 Version Update
The core smart contract programming language Move, used by the Sui ecosystem, has undergone a major update. The 2024 release introduces enums, macro functions, and method syntax, greatly enriching the developer’s toolkit and enabling more efficient and flexible application development.
Enums allow developers to define a single type that can hold multiple data forms. This is more flexible than structs, whose fields are fixed, whereas enums can vary their fields based on the variant. For instance, in enum Option<T> { None, Some(T) }, None contains no fields while Some holds one field of type T.
Additionally, Move’s macro functions enable simulation of higher-order functions such as map, filter, and fold, commonly used in many programming languages for concise collection manipulation. Although Move does not support runtime behaviors like lambda functions or function pointers, macro functions allow these higher-order operations to be inlined at compile time, enhancing both efficiency and expressiveness.
These updates are expected to roll out first on Devnet, then gradually progress to Testnet and Mainnet, ensuring stability and reliability in production environments.

Infrastructure Development
To further enhance network performance and user experience, Sui unveiled several technological innovations at its first global offline conference, Sui Basecamp, including Mysticeti, which significantly reduces finality time, and Pilotfish, enabling validators to scale capacity across multiple machines. These innovations allow Sui to scale horizontally almost without limits, greatly boosting network scalability.
Furthermore, Sui has introduced unique technologies to make blockchain more accessible to mainstream users. For example, zkLogin enables on-chain authentication via traditional OAuth providers like Google and Twitter, allowing all users to operate directly on-chain through single sign-on, eliminating the need to manage wallet addresses and seed phrases. zkSend leverages zkLogin so users can send and claim tokens simply by sharing or clicking a link. With Sui’s extremely low transaction fees, transaction sponsorship allows developers to remove the final barrier to user participation. The Enoki solution offers enterprises plug-and-play blockchain technology, enabling seamless integration with the Sui network and simplifying enterprise-grade blockchain adoption.

The rapid growth of the Sui ecosystem is driven by its vibrant community and developer engagement. Sui and its community organize various events, including online webinars, hackathons, and developer competitions. On April 21, 2024, Sui launched its inaugural global hackathon, Sui Overflow.
