Analyzing Satoshi Nakamoto's Early Emails: What Was the Contribution of the "Mysterious Donor" Behind Satoshi?
A legendary donation that helped propel Bitcoin's development in its early days.

Last week, over 100 emails written by Bitcoin’s creator (Satoshi Nakamoto) were made public for the first time. This marks the largest addition of information about Satoshi to date, yielding many new discoveries. Yet nothing is more intriguing than the “mysterious donor” behind Satoshi, as for the first time regarding funding matters, Satoshi explicitly stated:
-
Providing financial support to individuals working to build services for the Bitcoin economy
-
Supporting early attempts to price Bitcoin in U.S. dollars
Prior to the release of these emails, there was no evidence confirming either point. Below is what we’ve learned so far:
The Legendary Donation
The emails reveal that a donor known to Satoshi provided $3,600 in funding for the project in 2010.
At the time, when each Bitcoin was priced at $0.06, this amount could have bought over 58,000 Bitcoins at market value. This donor made a significant sacrifice for Bitcoin’s long-term development.
The conversation about the “donor” occurred between Martti Malmi (an early Bitcoin developer) and Satoshi, but lasted only about a year.
July 2009:
Satoshi opened the discussion by saying: "If we have projects that need funding, I can find some donors, but they wish to remain anonymous, which makes it difficult for us to actually use the funds."

August 2009:
Martti consulted Satoshi about fundraising for his newly established Bitcoin exchange platform, Bitcoin Market.
Although Satoshi indicated he hoped the matter would proceed “independently” of his involvement, he still mentioned the possibility of finding a “sponsor” for the idea.

June 2010:
Satoshi again mentioned receiving a $2,000 donation.
He noted that the money needed to be transferred through Martti to protect the donor's identity.

July 2010:
The donor had still not sent any funds to Martti.

July 2010:
Satoshi responded that he would contact the donor again to prioritize payment.

July 2010:
Martti received the $3,600 donation and agreed to use it for project expenses such as web hosting services.

July 2010:
Satoshi agreed to allocate $1,000 from the donation to Martti’s new exchange platform.
Notably, Satoshi also suggested that the funds could be lent to other businesses potentially willing to accept Bitcoin.

Six months later, Satoshi disappeared.
This is all the information available so far about this donor. To this day, their identity remains a mystery. But clearly, this donor’s sacrifice played a crucial role in advancing Bitcoin’s early success. Whoever they are, Bitcoin owes them a debt of gratitude.
