Itau Unibanco, Brazil's largest bank by assets, has made a significant leap into the digital asset space. The banking giant recently announced the launch of BTC and ETH trading services, marking a key step for mainstream financial services in Latin America toward integrating crypto assets.
Itau Unibanco’s entry into the crypto market is a notable event, especially considering the bank’s prominent position in the region. According to Reuters, this move is part of Itau’s expansion of its investment platform, incorporating trading of well-known crypto assets such as BTC and ETH.

Guto Antunes, head of digital assets at Itau, emphasized the bank’s strategic approach to crypto asset trading—starting with BTC and ETH, with plans to diversify its crypto offerings in the future.
“It starts with BTC, but our overall strategic plan is to expand to other crypto assets in the future,” said Itau’s head of digital assets.
Antunes also revealed that any expansion of crypto asset services will depend on regulatory developments in Brazil within this sector.
In June, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took a key step toward establishing a clearer regulatory framework for crypto assets by authorizing the Central Bank of Brazil to oversee and determine which entities can operate in the crypto market.

Following this development, Central Bank President Roberto Campos Neto stated in September his intention to implement stricter regulation of crypto assets. He also emphasized during a congressional fiscal and taxation hearing the need for stringent oversight of virtual asset brokers.
As regulatory efforts strengthen, adoption of crypto assets within Brazil continues to surge. In June, more than 3.2 million individuals and approximately 89,000 businesses in Brazil were actively engaged in crypto asset trading.
Notably, Itau Unibanco’s entry into the space coincides with an ongoing upswing in the global crypto market. For example, BTC has recently demonstrated strong upward momentum, with ETH reflecting similar positive trends.
