Tellor Tributes Price Watch: Interpreting Fund Flows and Fundamental Factors
How to find trading opportunities in the liquidity market?
Author: Duoduo, LD Capital
Recently, the cryptocurrency market has shown weak performance, with continuous capital outflows and low volatility in Bitcoin and Ethereum, entering a phase of downward consolidation amid muted trading volumes. Existing funds are primarily concentrated on a few select projects for short-term speculation. So, how can one identify funding-driven trading opportunities?
The author observed and tracked short-term funding dynamics of TRB (Tellor Tributes, an oracle service provider) to identify potential early signals preceding price increases, while also examining fundamental factors to assess any clear bullish or bearish catalysts. From August 25 to the early morning of August 28, the TRB token price rose from $9.6 to a high of $16, nearly a 66% gain, followed by a correction.
1. Funding Analysis
First, consider the token's basic information. The total supply is approximately 2.49 million tokens, with a circulating supply of 2.48 million, indicating it is essentially fully circulating.

As of August 26, Binance held over 43% of the total supply—the top ten addresses collectively hold a highly concentrated portion of the token.

After the sharp drop on August 18, TRB entered its lowest price range since the beginning of this year—and since 2021. After several days of consolidation, the daily chart found support again around $9.5.

On August 21, a large on-chain transfer was detected—the highest level since January this year, significantly exceeding previous data. At the same time, the price remained stable near $10. This suggests that accumulation might have been taking place on-chain. Therefore, we further monitored changes in futures trading volume and open interest. However, abnormal on-chain transfers do not necessarily indicate accumulation; they must be evaluated in context with the token’s price level, presence of unusual events, and subsequent changes in trading volume and price.

In the morning of August 26, a steady rise in futures trading volume and open interest was observed. Meanwhile, the price broke above the upper boundary of a 4-hour consolidation range.
The following chart shows derivative data from the morning of August 26: 24-hour futures trading volume increased by 151%, and open interest rose by 93%. Large accounts were positioned long, while the long-to-short ratio among retail traders stood at 0.96, indicating heavy retail shorting. At this point, we concluded that short-term capital had begun flowing into TRB, making a price increase likely.

Over the next two days, both futures trading volume and open interest surged dramatically. In the past 24 hours, futures trading volume reached $1.6 billion, with open interest peaking at approximately $68 million.
The chart below illustrates key derivatives metrics for TRB as of August 28. Open interest continued rising until the early morning of August 28. When the price spiked to $16, significant short liquidations occurred, accompanied by a decline in open interest. Subsequently, open interest shifted from an uptrend to a downtrend, and the price began consolidating lower. Funding rates reached their highest negative premium during the post-spike retest.
Currently, large accounts remain net long. The long-to-short ratio among retail traders is 0.3452, indicating substantial retail participation on the short side. Funding rates remain slightly negative but have returned to more normal levels.

2. Fundamental Analysis
Understanding the project’s fundamentals helps confirm its current status and whether there are obvious catalysts or risks.
Tellor Tributes, launched in 2019, is a decentralized oracle protocol that incentivizes an open, permissionless network for data reporting and verification, ensuring data can be provided by anyone and verified by all.
Tellor uses a mining mechanism to implement its oracle system, enabling decentralized off-chain data queries. The system consists of a network of data providers (miners), who compete to add data points to the on-chain database through the "Tributes" (TRB) token incentive model.
TRB employs a hybrid POS and POW token issuance model with no fixed supply cap. Nodes stake TRB tokens and solve POW puzzles; the first five nodes to solve each puzzle submit data and receive TRB rewards. Starting from Ethereum block height 9619370, the block reward decreases by 0.003% per block until it reaches 1 TRB per block, after which it remains constant. At that stage, 5.5 tokens are minted per block, resulting in a 17% inflation rate. The network entered the 1 TRB reward phase in 2021.
Based on the current circulating supply, the annual inflation rate is 17%, equating to approximately 420,000 new tokens per year, or 35,000 per month.
The community maintains relatively active development and engagement. Key files on GitHub were updated three days ago, indicating a high update frequency. Twitter followers number 32.5K, with 1,488 posts and regular weekday activity. YouTube channel has 1.28K subscribers and 229 videos, including weekly development meetings, with the latest uploaded last week. Discord has 4.7K members; recent daily message counts range from a few to dozens—moderate activity. The blog was last updated on August 9, 2023.
Business development progress is modest. According to the official website, Tellor has been deployed on the following public chains or Layer 2 networks, as shown below, including recently popular L2s such as Optimism, Arbitrum, and Base.

The team has not disclosed specific details regarding: the number and distribution of nodes participating in the network; DApps actively using the oracle; total volume of data served; or revenue generated from services.
Overall, Tellor Tributes appears to be in maintenance mode, with no major technological or business breakthroughs, and limited competitive advantages.
3. Conclusion
The recent price surge in Tellor Tributes (TRB) was primarily driven by capital inflows. After the spike in the early hours of August 28, open interest declined, followed by a clear price pullback.
In the current market environment, when seeking trading opportunities, consider the following key points:
1. Is the token price (for those with Binance futures contracts) trading in a historical low range?
2. What is the concentration level of token holdings, and who holds them?
3. Have there been any recent abnormal on-chain activities?
4. Has there been a noticeable and sustained increase in futures trading volume and open interest?
5. What are the positions of large accounts, and what is the long-to-short ratio among traders?
6. If open interest starts declining after a sustained increase, especially following a price spike, it may signal a short-term price top.
