Sun Yanzi posts: Humans can't surpass AI; being yourself is already enough
Faced with this sudden AI onslaught, Stefanie Sun likened herself to someone sitting in the best seat at the cinema, munching popcorn.
Recently, "AI Stefanie Sun" has become an internet sensation on Bilibili. Netizens have used AI models combined with post-processing techniques to simulate the singing voice of real artists, covering various songs. In video after video, a disc bearing Stefanie Sun's image slowly spins, while her AI-generated voice performs classic and popular tracks such as Jay Chou's "Hair Like Snow" and "Love Before BC," or Liu Huan's "Song of the Hero."
In response to this phenomenon, Stefanie Sun herself took to social media to publish an essay titled "My AI," marking her first public comment. In it, she stated: "People long believed that forming thoughts or opinions was a task machines could never replicate, as it lay beyond their capabilities. Yet now, it stands right before us—posing a threat to thousands of jobs created by humans, in fields like law, medicine, accounting, and now, the one we're discussing: singing."
"This new technology will be able to provide everyone with everything they need—whether independent, distorted, or even crazy—potentially generating uniquely tailored content just for you."
Facing this sudden wave of AI, Stefanie Sun likened herself to someone sitting in the best seat at a cinema, munching popcorn. "In this boundless sea of existence, anything is possible, and yet, nothing really matters. I believe that maintaining purity of thought and being true to oneself is enough."
Below is the original text of Stefanie Sun’s “My AI”:
While I’ve been despairing over my increasingly protruding belly and the daily trivialities of raising children, AI Stefanie Sun has made her grand entrance—prompting me to write something.
My fans have officially switched allegiance, accepting that I am now a niche artist, while my AI counterpart has become today’s top trending star. What can you possibly compete with when someone releases a new album every few minutes?
Whether you call it ChatGPT, AI, or whatever name you prefer, this “thing” can now process massive amounts of information and coherently assemble complex, unique content—mimicking or even creating anew. Wait a second—don’t humans do exactly that? We once firmly believed that forming ideas or viewpoints was beyond machine replication, outside their reach. But now, here it stands, clearly emerging and threatening countless human-created professions—law, medicine, accounting, and now, the one we’re talking about: singing.
You might object: “I can still tell the difference—it lacks emotion, nuances in tone and breath (or whatever terms you’d use).” Sorry, but I suspect that’s only a very short-term reaction.
Ironically, the moment when humans can no longer surpass machines is fast approaching. No human can access such vast quantities of information and make precisely the right choices—or even the right mistakes (OK, maybe I’m one step ahead). This new technology will mass-produce everything each person desires. No matter how obscure, bizarre, or mentally twisted you are, there could be uniquely crafted content made specifically for you. You’re not special—you’re already predictable, and unfortunately, customizable too.
Right now, I feel like someone sitting in the best seat at the cinema, eating popcorn. (By the way, under current conditions, no technology may ever predict what it truly feels like to be me—until this article appears online.) It’s like watching that film *Everything Everywhere All at Once*, which changed so many of our lives—but in this case, I don’t believe the idea of love will save the day.
In this boundless ocean of existence, anything is possible, and yet, nothing really matters. I believe that having a pure mind and staying true to oneself is enough.
That’s all I have to say. Wishing you all the best.
