Mirror CTO: Ditch Email, Build the New Internet Around Web3 Wallets
It's time to start building communities around the new identity primitive of the internet: web3 wallets.

From 2010 to 2020, email addresses remained the primary method for internet identity login and management. Building email address lists became crucial for creators and marketing teams to maintain engagement and communicate with their audiences. However, it's time to start building communities around a new identity primitive on the internet: web3 wallets.
Today, emails are still useful for notifications, but we no longer want our online experiences centered around usernames, email addresses, or phone numbers—we want to build the internet around web3 wallets.
Before email addresses, most people used usernames to identify themselves—choosing a username and reusing it across different forums, often with the same username/password combination for authentication. But email addresses proved to be a stronger identity tool than usernames.
This is because they offer two key capabilities:
1. Websites can send alerts and announcements via email.
2. Emails can serve as an account recovery mechanism; we rely on the security of our email accounts as the foundation for logging into many other platforms.
But web3 wallets offer even more capabilities:
1. Wallets provide strong verification of authorship, as users can digitally sign content using their private keys.
2. Wallets enable encrypted messaging, providing end-to-end privacy across platforms.
3. Wallets enable native purchasing capabilities within web experiences, without requiring credit card connections or reliance on third-party payment services like Stripe or Amazon.
4. Wallets enable universal logins without giving control to specific corporations such as Facebook—or governments.
