Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto Partner to Launch Shelby: A High-Performance, Decentralized Hot Storage Network Challenging Traditional Cloud Services
Metaplex, Story Protocol, DoubleZero, and Pipe Network have taken the lead in focusing on this area, with Shelby set to deliver decentralized storage solutions at cloud speed for streaming, AI, and real-time content.
Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto today jointly launched Shelby, an independent hot storage network and protocol designed for continuous, high-frequency Web3 applications. Shelby combines a high-performance node network, dedicated fiber-optic backbone, and on-chain programmable architecture to deliver decentralized storage support for real-time applications such as video streaming, AI data pipelines, social networks, and DePIN—offering cloud-level performance while maintaining full decentralization.
Currently, over 82.5% of global internet traffic comes from video and live content. Traditional cloud services struggle to meet real-time demands and often lock developers into closed ecosystems. Shelby offers a new on-chain path: a decentralized hot storage protocol that matches cloud performance while ensuring all data flows are verifiable on-chain, enabling developers to build next-generation applications without compromise.
Shelby is the result of deep collaboration between two leading forces in Web3—Aptos Labs and Jump Crypto. Several Aptos Labs engineers previously worked at Meta on scaling platforms like Instagram and are now building consumer-grade blockchain infrastructure for Shelby, enabling fast coordination, flexible logic, and instant usability. Meanwhile, Jump Crypto, one of the most active infrastructure builders in the digital asset space, brings expertise in real-time systems and ultra-fast trading to deliver low-latency read/write operations and parallel data streams. By combining Web3's economic models with Web2 speed, Shelby integrates cutting-edge technologies from both worlds and aims to create an entirely new vertical in data storage.
Balancing Web3’s flexibility and economic models with Web2-level performance has long been a shared challenge for leading projects. Decentralized storage has traditionally meant "cold," slow, and static—suitable for archiving but inadequate for real-time needs. Shelby redefines this with a new data primitive: a "hot," programmable storage system supporting streaming, native monetization, and continuous evolution based on usage patterns. This enables sub-second read speeds, enforceable access control logic, and dynamic pricing capabilities.
How Shelby Works
Shelby operates on a global network of high-performance servers connected via a dedicated fiber-optic backbone, augmented with edge caching to enable sub-second content access at scale.
Its architecture supports pay-per-use billing, token-based access control, tipping mechanisms, DRM rights protection, and smart contract-defined permission management—all without performance degradation. Shelby leverages Aptos’ mainnet for coordination, benefiting from 600ms finality, 30,000 TPS throughput, and gas fees as low as $0.000005 per transaction.
While Aptos serves as the protocol’s native coordination layer, Shelby is designed to be multi-chain compatible and will support major ecosystems including Ethereum and Solana in the future.
Avery Ching, CEO of Aptos Labs: “Shelby represents the next chapter in decentralized infrastructure. It’s not just faster and more flexible—it unlocks entirely new categories of real-time applications that can scale across chains, empowering developers and creators to truly own their data and economic models.”
Saurabh Sharma, Head of Investments at Jump Crypto: “With Shelby, we aim to break the false dichotomy between speed and centralization. Shelby enables natively scalable high-speed data transfer, on-chain permission logic, and content monetization—this isn’t just a breakthrough for Web3, it redefines the entire internet.”
Key Use Cases Supported by Shelby Include:
● Streaming Services: Creators can deploy pay-per-view livestreams or premium video memberships without cold storage delays;
● On-Chain Data: A decentralized source for indexers and block snapshots;
● AI Data Markets: Training datasets remain perpetually available without repeated uploads/downloads, with version control support;
● DePIN and Social Networks: Sensor and user-generated content updated in real time, enabling decentralized social platforms and on-chain analytics;
Web2 and Web3 projects including Metaplex, Story Protocol, DoubleZero, and Pipe are actively exploring Shelby, reflecting strong market demand for cross-chain real-time infrastructure and the growing influence of the Aptos ecosystem.
A developer-focused testnet (Devnet) is expected to launch in Q4 2025, followed by a public testnet. Shelby will support Aptos, Ethereum, Solana, and plans to expand to other modular ecosystems.
Shelby is not merely a new product—it’s a paradigm shift in infrastructure, symbolizing the future convergence of Web3 and Web2: a new data layer built for speed, scalability, and controllable economic models.
