Trump Seeks Supreme Court Authority to Fire Senior Agency Officials, Outcome Could Affect Fed Chair Tenure
According to Bloomberg, former President Donald Trump has petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court seeking permission to immediately dismiss senior officials from two independent agencies. The case involves members of the National Labor Relations Board and the Merit Systems Protection Board, with Trump urging the Court to hold a special session in May this year to hear the matter.
This legal challenge targets a 90-year-old Supreme Court precedent allowing Congress to shield certain high-ranking officials from presidential removal. A favorable ruling could set a precedent enabling the president to remove leaders of independent agencies—including the Federal Reserve Chair.
It is known that Trump has previously expressed public dissatisfaction with the current Fed Chair and voiced desire for his dismissal.
