Mastering Sonic: 9 Simple Steps to Easily Experience DeFi
Holding $S is the first step for most activities in this guide.

Do you want to experience decentralized finance (DeFi) on Sonic but aren't sure where to start? Maybe you've heard of "yield looping" or "concentrated liquidity," but find these concepts too complex.
If, like me, you prefer simple and straightforward actions that also earn rewards (yield + points) without requiring deep technical knowledge, then this guide is for you.
Disclaimer: This article is for educational purposes only and does not constitute investment advice. Always do your own research before participating in any DeFi protocol.
1. Hold $S
Holding $S is the first step for most activities in this guide. If you have assets on other blockchains, use apps like deBridge, Rhino, Magpie, or Stargate to bridge them over and acquire some $S.
Besides, simply holding $S earns passive points toward potential Sonic airdrops.
To learn more about bridging, check out this guide or my pinned tweet.
2. Buy an NFT on PaintSwap
While buying NFTs isn't strictly DeFi, it's a simple way to interact with the chain. Visit PaintSwap and explore available NFT collections. When you find something you like, place a bid or buy it outright.
Although holding NFTs doesn’t earn points, some offer extra benefits such as airdrops or whitelist access for other Sonic events.
3. Swap $S for Liquid Staking Tokens (LST)
Liquid staking allows you to stake your tokens while maintaining liquidity. Exchange part of your $S for LSTs such as stS (Beets), OS (Origin), or aS (Angles) to earn yield (e.g., stS offers ~4.5% APY). These LSTs also accumulate passive airdrop points.
Bonus: Transfer newly acquired LSTs (e.g., OS) to Spectra, select a fixed-rate (PT) position, and deposit OS to earn additional yield.
4. Deposit USDC into Silo
Think of Silo as a bank account on-chain. You can deposit assets to lend and borrow. A simple way to earn yield is by depositing USDC into one of its markets to start earning ~6.5% APY—just like a bank, but on-chain. You’ll also earn passive airdrop points.
5. Provide Single-Sided Liquidity on SwapX
Traditional liquidity provision (LP) usually requires holding both assets in a pool (e.g., S/USDC). SwapX supports single-sided deposits, meaning you only need one asset (e.g., USDC). Find a stablecoin pool, deposit some stablecoins, and start earning trading fees.
6. Swap Tokens on Shadow
Have some $S and want to exchange it for other tokens—or even some memecoins? Head to the swap interface on Shadow, select your tokens, approve the transaction, and confirm. While this action doesn’t earn points, you can trade the tokens you love.
Bonus: You can also stake on Shadow. Convert your assets into $SHADOW, go to the $xShadow tab, convert $SHADOW to $xSHADOW, and stake. This way, you’ll receive weekly rewards.
7. Deposit Assets on Rings to Mint scUSD
Rings offers a yield-bearing stablecoin called scUSD. Deposit USDC to mint scUSD, then stake it as stkscUSD to earn approximately 5.5% APY while accumulating passive airdrop points.
8. Stake $S on mySonic
Unlike staking $S to receive liquid tokens (like stS), staking on mySonic does not give you a liquid receipt token. Simply choose a node and stake your $S to earn around 5.5% yield. While it offers solid returns, this action does not earn airdrop points.
9. Bonus: Boost Yields via Magpie
After getting comfortable with swapping and staking, take it further with Magpie Boosts to earn Eggs (Magpie points) for their potential airdrop. For example, deposit scUSD into Euler vaults to earn extra yield and collect Magpie rewards.
These actions are simple, reward-earning, and airdrop-point-generating—they mimic traditional banking functions, but you're using Web3 tools like wallets and dApps.
DeFi doesn’t have to be intimidating. Sonic makes it easy and enjoyable for everyone.
Have fun!
