Can Musk's proposal to govern with blockchain become a new key to government transparency?

According to people familiar with the matter, Elon Musk has initiated discussions on using blockchain technology within the newly established U.S. Department of Government Efficiency—a latest sign that the Trump administration hopes to boost the digital asset industry.
A person familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity due to the private nature of the discussions, said that Musk, who is leading efforts to improve government efficiency, has raised with close allies the idea of using digital ledgers to reduce government costs. The person said blockchain applications have been discussed for tracking federal spending, securing data, making payments, and even managing buildings.
One individual familiar with the talks said officials associated with the Department of Government Efficiency have already met with representatives from several public blockchains to evaluate their technologies.

Representatives from both the White House and the Department of Government Efficiency did not respond to requests for comment. Musk did not reply to an email seeking comment.
The Department of Government Efficiency, created by an executive order from Trump on January 20, is tasked with modernizing federal technology and software to maximize government efficiency and productivity. Trump has stated that the team will work with the White House Office of Management and Budget to identify expenditures that can be cut, delivering recommendations by July 4, 2026.
One person said that before Trump’s inauguration, Musk recruited approximately 100 volunteers to write code for his projects.
