When we talk about Ethereum, discussions often revolve around restaking protocols and Layer 2 scaling solutions. Occasionally, when Ethereum's mainnet gas fees spike, we might reminisce about high-performance Layer 1 alternatives. Yet, among all these blockchains, only a few truly capture public attention and widespread discussion. Solana is one of them—boasting a thriving ecosystem, an abundance of meme coins, and strong wealth effects. Cosmos is another, with its growing ecosystem of application-specific chains generating continuous value. NEAR has recently drawn market attention due to AI trends, NEAR DA, and chain abstraction. In today’s fast-moving market where thematic rotations occur rapidly, capturing user attention is incredibly difficult. This challenge is even greater for TON, whose Total Value Locked (TVL) stands at merely $50 million—a negligible figure compared to the billions locked in other major blockchains or Layer 2 networks.
Yet TON is taking a different path—one that doesn't rely on DeFi. Leveraging Telegram's over 900 million monthly active users, TON focuses instead on enhancing everyday user experiences in social interaction, utility tools, and gaming. For example, it integrates native wallets directly into Telegram, enabling seamless onboarding into the crypto world for regular users. A variety of simple yet engaging mini-games, enhanced by social integration and NFT elements, have driven significant participation. Additionally, numerous utility tools have gained popularity among both developers and users.
TON operates under a technical philosophy centered on high-speed applications: transactions are directly submitted via messages with peer-to-peer support, and its dynamic multi-shard architecture ensures scalability—designed from the outset to serve massive user bases.
From its inception, TON attracted widespread attention, only to face setbacks after being sued by the U.S. SEC, leading to project delays. Eventually, the community took over development, navigating through ups and downs. During the subsequent bear market, it remained largely overlooked for an extended period. However, things began improving last year. According to Q4 2023 reports, TON’s developer community had grown to 13,000 members, and tAPP’s monthly active users surged 75% month-on-month in December, reaching 12,000.
