Today, according to The Wall Street Journal, U.S. fintech company Stripe is in talks to acquire OpenRouter, a leading large model hub. Currently, the specific price of the transaction is unclear, but some insiders say the valuation could reach approximately $10 billion (approximately 67.755 billion yuan).

Insiders added that several other large tech companies are also considering acquiring OpenRouter. The deal between Stripe and OpenRouter could be announced soon, but negotiations could still fall through, and other bidders may emerge.

OpenRouter was founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah and Louis Vichy, and is headquartered in San Francisco, USA. The company's CEO Alex Atallah previously founded the world's largest NFT platform OpenSea and exited before the bubble burst, switching to the AI sector.

OpenRouter belongs to an emerging track in the AI infrastructure field—the large model hub, essentially a model router or model aggregation platform.

Specifically, OpenRouter's platform integrates over 400 large language models, including closed-source commercial models like OpenAI's GPT series and Anthropic's Claude series, as well as open-source models like DeepSeek and Kimi. Developers and enterprises only need to use OpenRouter's set of API interfaces to simultaneously call, compare, and switch AI models from different vendors, without having to integrate separately with each vendor.

The business value of this model lies in two points: first, helping enterprises compare options and automatically select the most cost-effective model for different task scenarios; second, providing failover capabilities, automatically switching to backup services when a model service goes down or is rate-limited, ensuring business continuity. For small and medium-sized developers who do not want to be locked in by a single AI giant but lack the ability to build their own model routing, this is equivalent to an extra layer of insurance.

OpenRouter's business model is also very direct, charging service fees to enterprise customers using its platform, or earning the spread on model services during the process of recharging credits.

In May this year, OpenRouter's valuation in the latest round of financing was $1.3 billion, with investors including Menlo Ventures and CapitalG, the growth fund under Google's parent company Alphabet. It is worth noting that OpenRouter and Stripe previously had a cooperative relationship, with the former using Stripe to process customer payments.

Stripe's acquisition of OpenRouter seems like a cross-industry move, but actually aligns with its strategy of expanding into the AI infrastructure field in recent years. This payment company's ties with the AI industry date back a long way; as early as 2023, OpenAI selected Stripe to handle subscription payments for ChatGPT Plus; today, all companies accessing online payments in the Forbes AI 50 list run on Stripe, with Anthropic, Midjourney, and Cohere all being its customers.

At the Stripe Sessions conference in April this year, Stripe released 288 products at once, with themes almost entirely focused on building economic infrastructure for AI, including Link wallets open to Agents, streaming payments settled in real-time by token, and the MPP protocol for machine-to-machine micropayments. Its co-founder and CEO Patrick Collison judged that agents will dominate the vast majority of online transactions in the future.

In addition to continuous new moves in the AI sector, Stripe is also partnering with private equity firm Advent International to advance the acquisition of PayPal. The unilateral acquisition offer issued by both parties recently valued PayPal at approximately $53 billion. However, this offer is considered too low, and Stripe and Advent are considering next steps.

Conclusion: Multi-Model Strategy Spurs "Routing Layer" Value

Currently, more and more enterprises tend to adopt a multi-model strategy, meaning not putting all bets on a single vendor like OpenAI or Anthropic, but flexibly allocating different models based on cost, performance, and reliability.

OpenRouter happens to be able to provide similar services, which is also one of the important reasons why its valuation can continue to grow in transactions. In the current context where model capabilities are tending to converge, enterprises that can connect demand and supply more efficiently are also demonstrating important value in the AI industry chain.
