Exploring Neutron: A Permissionless Cross-Chain Smart Contract Platform
Neutron is an interchain smart contract platform that has integrated Cosmos Hub's replicated security feature.
Binance has just announced it will list Neutron ($NTRN) today at 20:00 Beijing time. This article aims to help you quickly understand what this project is and whether it's worth investing in.
What is Neutron?
Neutron is a cross-chain smart contract platform that has integrated Cosmos Hub’s Replicated Security feature. Built on the Cosmos SDK and CosmWasm, Neutron enables interoperability among over 51 blockchains within the Cosmos network. This framework aims to provide developers with a secure environment to build smart contracts and decentralized applications (DApps).
Key Features of Neutron
-
Interchain Security: Neutron leverages Cosmos' Interchain Security model, collaborating with 175 validators who have staked approximately 186 million $ATOM. This mechanism allows these validators to produce blocks for the Neutron chain.
-
Cross-Chain Communication: Neutron supports the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC), Inter-Chain Accounts (ICA), and Inter-Chain Queries (ICQ). These features aim to enhance communication within the IBC framework and enable operations such as cross-chain liquid staking and cross-chain collateralization.
-
Permissionless Framework: Neutron operates on a permissionless basis, meaning it is designed to allow anyone to deploy code and participate in the cross-chain economy.

Recent Developments
In May 2023, following approval from the Cosmos Hub community, Neutron launched its mainnet. The platform was developed to simplify the deployment of smart contracts and DApps on Cosmos Hub.
Neutron and Binance
From a financial standpoint, Neutron recently completed a funding round led by Binance Labs, raising $10 million. Other participants in this round included CoinFund, Delphi Ventures, LongHash Ventures, Semantic Ventures, and Nomad Capital.
This investment was announced on June 21, 2023. Less than four months later, Binance is now preparing to list Neutron.
Neutron ($NTRN) Tokenomics
According to Neutron, the $NTRN token distribution is as follows:

The total supply of $NTRN is capped at 1,000,000,000 tokens, with zero inflation—meaning no additional tokens will be issued beyond the initial one billion.
These tokens are divided into four categories:
-
Founders: Locked for one year and linearly unlocked over three years. No voting rights during the transfer restriction period.
-
Early Supporters: Locked for one year and linearly unlocked over three years. Voting rights are retained during the transfer restriction period.
-
Community: Distributed via Neutron’s airdrop and launch campaigns. 3-month unlock period with optional lock-up extensions. Voting rights are retained during the transfer restriction period.
-
Neutron DAO: Tokens held in the DAO’s reserve and treasury. Mostly liquid, but can only be used or transferred with majority voter approval.
As a result, the initial circulating supply of $NTRN is approximately 66%, with 12% held by the community through airdrops and 54% allocated to the team.
Use Cases
Transaction fees are Neutron’s primary revenue source. They come from both native transactions and cross-chain transactions processed through Neutron’s IBC fee model. Fees can be paid in either NTRN or ATOM tokens.
-
25% of the fees are sent to Cosmos Hub as payment for replicated security;
-
The remaining 75% is either burned (in the case of NTRN) or sent to the Neutron DAO reserve (for ATOM and other tokens).
However, it remains unclear exactly how much of the 75% NTRN portion will be burned.
Final Thoughts
Neutron is still an immature project, and the team controls the vast majority of the token’s circulating supply. While it appears innovative within the Cosmos ecosystem, I would not invest in a project that has obvious errors on its official website.
