In 2021, DAOs surged in popularity, with widespread belief that DAOs would become a massive structure and that every Web3 organization—and even Web2 company—would eventually transition into a DAO. We saw all kinds of DAOs being built, from social DAOs to DeFi DAOs, investment DAOs, and service DAOs.
This brings to mind the "picks and shovels" theory, inspired by the famous mid-19th century gold rush, when thousands of hopeful prospectors headed west seeking fortune. It was a risky bet, as not everyone succeeded. Yet, the best way to profit from this gold rush was to sell essential tools—“picks and shovels”—to these aspiring miners.
Likewise, cryptocurrency is the new gold rush, and DAOs are among the hottest prospects. By the end of 2021, everyone began building “picks and shovels” for DAOs.
What happened? Within just a few months, we realized that “there are more DAO tools than DAOs!” Indeed, on Twitter alone, we can see an abundance of DAO tools, yet DAOs still struggle at the most basic levels of governance!
In this deep dive, we will explore and survey the landscape of tools within the Solana ecosystem, their shortcomings, and what problems DAOs truly need to solve.
This article is structured into the following sections:
- Introduction—DAOs and DAO tools: where do they stand today?
- Deep dive into tool listings (what they are, key features, etc.).
- Challenges and opportunities within the ecosystem (the interesting part).
- Conclusion.
Let’s begin.
Solana & DAOs
We’re seeing many DAO tools gaining traction within Solana. To better understand them, we can categorize various DAO tools into:
- DAO discovery: finding products for DAOs
- DAO infrastructure: AWS for DAOs
- Talent mobility: LinkedIn for DAOs
- Productivity and collaboration: G-Suite for DAOs
- Payment-focused: Stripe for DAOs
- Fund management: Banks for DAOs

Discovering DAOs: DAO Marketplaces
While these may not strictly qualify as DAO tools, they are excellent platforms for discovering DAOs, allowing contributors to explore different DAOs much like browsing various products on Product Hunt by category, reviews, etc.
Here are some examples:

CREW3
Onboarding for contributors, data-driven automation to reward active contributors, and its app-integrated active member engagement.
Truts
Truts enables people to easily discover top DAOs in their field through reviews.

Discover DAOs
Find any information about DAOs and discover new ones among the numerous DAOs listed on the site.

- Features include wallet-to-wallet chat, in-dApp notifications, email, and SMS.
- It currently powers messaging and notifications for Solana’s largest projects.

Reputation-Based Tools
When building communities, having a value measurement system is crucial. Especially in DAOs, contributors can be rewarded monetarily (via tokens) and abstractly (reputation within the DAO). These tools help you earn rewards based on your on-chain reputation.

Underdog Protocol
It helps people build their on-chain network and recognize and reward their biggest supporters by issuing tokens on Solana—think of it as LinkedIn Kudos.

xHashtag
- When collaborating with Web3 projects, xHashtag helps them build and grow a reliable community, leveraging large user bases for projects and ultimately rewarding their contributions to tasks and events with non-transferable achievement credentials called SoulSwags.
- xHashtag is supported by Titan Ventures, SOLRAZR, KuCoin Labs, ZBS Capital, and many other investors and advisors.
Decision-Making and Governance
In the context of DAOs, governance refers to the mechanism for modifying any aspect of the protocol held by the DAO. Members of a DAO typically need to hold a specific number of tokens to propose changes, and these modifications are approved or rejected based on votes cast by DAO members.

Tribeca
- Tribeca is a protocol for creating, managing, and interacting with DAOs on Solana. It is an open-source governance primitive built and maintained by members of leading Solana protocols.
- Launched integrations and DAOs for many protocols including Sabre, Friktion, Port Finance, Arrow, Acumen, and others.
