TechFlow news: On January 23, according to Cointelegraph, the mayor and board of aldermen of Kingsport, Tennessee, unanimously approved a zoning ordinance amendment to facilitate operations by cryptocurrency mining companies and data centers within the city.
The amendment specifies legally permissible locations for such facilities within the city, requiring cryptocurrency mining to occur “within fully enclosed buildings” and prohibiting operations within 152 meters (500 feet) of residential areas. Additionally, mining operations must undergo sound assessments, with maximum noise levels capped at 60 decibels.
In its report, the Kingsport City Planning Commission stated: “The city’s industrial zoning code was drafted before the advent of large-scale digitalization, and we anticipate new data-driven industries will seek locations to develop.”
Furthermore, Tennessee State Representative Jody Barrett introduced the “Tennessee Strategic Bitcoin Reserve Act,” proposing that the state treasury be permitted to allocate up to 10% of its general fund toward bitcoin investments.
