TechFlow Editor's Note: As the shadow of quantum computing gradually approaches, Wall Street finally can't sit still. Nine institutions including BlackRock, Fidelity, and Coinbase have put up real money, betting $15 million over three years on Bitcoin's post-quantum defense. This is not alarmism, but a matter of life and death truly cared about by giants holding hundreds of billions of dollars in Bitcoin.

A group composed of leading financial institutions and Bitcoin companies announced today the formation of the Bitcoin Security Consortium, dedicated to supporting the long-term security and resilience of the Bitcoin network, with members committing to invest a total of $15 million over the next three years.

Founding members include Anchorage Digital, ARK Invest, BlackRock, Block, Blockstream, Coinbase, Fidelity Digital Assets, Galaxy, and Strategy, covering every link of the institutional Bitcoin ecosystem: holders, custodians, exchanges, infrastructure providers, payment processors, and asset management companies, united by a common concern for Bitcoin's continued security.

The consortium's daily operations are coordinated by Mike Schmidt, Executive Director of the non-profit organization Brink, which specializes in funding and supporting Bitcoin open-source developers; Schmidt serves in this capacity as a volunteer.

Commitment of $15 Million

The consortium will help fund and support developers and researchers already engaged in Bitcoin security work, including long-term efforts to prepare for the potential quantum computing era. As part of the launch, members have independently committed a total of $15 million over the next three years for this work. Each member independently decides where to direct funds among developers, researchers, and organizations of their choice.

The consortium will also provide a clear and reliable source of information about these efforts for investors, the public, and the media.

"As long-term holders, we have ample motivation to ensure Bitcoin remains secure for future generations. Funding those engaged in this work and helping drive related discussions is a natural way for us to contribute." — Phong Le, CEO of Strategy

Supporting the Existing Open Ecosystem

The consortium mimics the way industry groups have long supported the open-source software they rely on, contributing resources and awareness, but not controlling the underlying work.

It does not develop or direct the Bitcoin protocol, take positions on specific protocol changes, nor speak on behalf of Bitcoin or its developers. Bitcoin development is, and will remain, the work of a global community of decentralized contributors.

"Bitcoin core developers do extremely important work, and we are pleased that our company and other members in the consortium will now provide significant additional funding to support Bitcoin's long-term security needs." — Robert Mitchnick, Global Head of Digital Assets at BlackRock

The Quantum Issue

Large-scale quantum computers capable of threatening Bitcoin cryptography do not exist today, and credible estimates suggest such capability is still years away. Nevertheless, preparing for post-quantum protection remains a meaningful long-term priority, and the Bitcoin technical community is already actively engaged in this work. The consortium aims to support this work and provide a reliable reference point for investors, the public, and the media as the field develops.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, the consortium plans to publish and maintain materials on Bitcoin security, updating them as progress is made, and continue to fund and support the developer community. Bitcoin has demonstrated extraordinary resilience through the work of an open global community, and the consortium is honored to support this community.
