Received a $500,000 donation from Vitalik: Learn about the network nation sandbox Zuitzerland
Zuitzerland is a network state sandbox project based in Switzerland, dedicated to exploring technology-driven models for future societies.

On April 3, Vitalik Buterin once again took action to support the future he believes in. He directly transferred 274 ETH—approximately $500,000—to the developers behind Zuitzerland, an experimental project. There was no massive publicity campaign, nor was it a high-profile fundraising event—just his usual style: when he sees something worth supporting, he acts.
What is Zuitzerland? How does it relate to Zuzalu and Edge City, other projects previously supported by Vitalik? And why are so many builders, researchers, and creators paying attention?
What is Zuitzerland?
Zuitzerland is an experimental initiative dedicated to exploring possible pathways for the future of society. By combining cutting-edge technology, decentralized governance, and the strengths of real-world institutions, it aims to build a "network state sandbox"—a live social experimentation ground for global builders, researchers, and creators.
The project is based in Switzerland, renowned for over 700 years of local autonomy and direct democracy. With its stable institutions and high levels of social trust, Switzerland stands out as a rare real-world example of "sustainable governance." Zuitzerland seeks to leverage this institutional foundation, integrating it with Web3 technologies to prototype a new form of society that is replicable and empirically verifiable.
In many ways, Zuitzerland represents an evolution and continuation of the Zuzalu vision. Zuzalu was a pop-up city experiment launched by Vitalik in 2023, which attracted pioneers from the global Web3, AI, and biotech communities over a two-month period. Its impact exceeded expectations, giving rise to spin-off initiatives such as Edge City. Zuitzerland takes the next step—establishing a permanent node that grounds the spirit of Zuzalu within tangible, real-world governance structures.
Through residency programs, pop-up city events, hackathons, and more, the project provides a collaborative platform where participants can co-create and test ideas centered on Web3, AI, biotechnology, privacy-preserving computation, brain-computer interfaces, and other frontier domains. At its core, Zuitzerland seeks to answer one fundamental question: Can a technically driven, distributed yet resilient society actually function in the real world?
Zuitzerland’s Approach to Practice
1. Turning “Governance” from Concept into Reality
Today, many decentralized projects and organizations face governance challenges: their ideals may be advanced, but they lack real-world application scenarios and effective testing environments. Zuitzerland offers a small-scale, controllable physical environment where novel social structures and governance mechanisms can be tested in practice. This goes beyond theoretical discussions about how DAOs should work—it’s about enabling people to live, collaborate, and self-govern in a shared space, continuously refining systems through lived experience.
Switzerland’s institutional framework provides a solid reference point. Drawing inspiration from Swiss democratic practices—such as referendums, local autonomy, and small-scale trust networks—Zuitzerland builds a practical model for decentralized governance.
2. Providing a Landing Ground for Innovators Across Disciplines
Zuitzerland targets three core groups:
-
Builders and Doers: Web3 developers, DAO participants, and others who can test new tools and form communities on-site.
-
Experts and Researchers: Policymakers, economists, and social scientists who can observe or engage in real-world prototype experiments.
-
Creators: Artists, philosophers, and cultural storytellers who bring human depth and narrative meaning to technological development.
Rather than aiming for mass appeal, Zuitzerland creates space for deeply committed individuals—those willing to actively participate in shaping the future.
3. Advancing “Safe Technological Acceleration”
Zuitzerland promotes the理念 of "Defensive Accelerationism (d/acc)"—the idea that while technological progress should be accelerated, it must also prioritize safety, ethical boundaries, and long-term resilience. In today’s rapidly evolving tech landscape, maintaining foundational order while innovating and avoiding systemic risks is a central challenge. Switzerland’s stability makes it an ideal testbed for d/acc experimentation.
4. Offering Limited but Real Support and Opportunities
The program will be open via application, prioritizing candidates with strong intent to participate but limited financial means. Partial scholarship support will cover accommodation (not travel). Applicants are expected to demonstrate both willingness and capacity for sustained engagement.
In addition, NFT holders will play a role in access selection. Supporters can contribute to the project via Juicebox and gain priority consideration—a mechanism aligned with the community-driven ethos championed by Zuitzerland.
Upcoming Plans
Zuitzerland’s activities will run throughout May, starting May 1, featuring themed weeks, workshops, summits, and hackathons focused on community building, Swiss-style governance, network states, emerging technologies, and future lifestyles. Participation costs are estimated at 650–2,500 Swiss francs per week.
Participants will collaboratively explore social prototypes, technology applications, and institutional innovation, culminating in project development and public demonstrations during the final week. The entire process progresses from conceptual exploration to hands-on prototyping, forming a complete experimental cycle.
