Standard Chartered and OKX Launch World-Leading Mirrored Staked Assets Initiative
By partnering with Franklin Templeton, the project supports the use of digital currencies and tokenized money market funds as collateral assets. Top investment firms such as Brevan Howard Digital will participate in this innovative initiative.
Dubai, UAE, April 10, 2025 — Today, Standard Chartered Bank and OKX, a leading global digital asset exchange and blockchain technology company, jointly announced the launch of a pioneering Global Collateral Mirroring Programme. The programme enables institutional clients to use cryptocurrencies and tokenized money market funds as over-the-counter (OTC) collateral, with custody of the collateral managed by a major global systemically important bank (G-SIB), significantly enhancing capital efficiency and security for institutional clients.
Margaret Harwood-Jones, Head of Global Financing & Securities Services at Standard Chartered, said: “As the digital asset landscape continues to evolve, we recognize that robust and secure custody solutions are essential. This collaboration with OKX, enabling the use of digital assets and tokenized money market funds as collateral, marks a critical step in building confidence and improving efficiency for our institutional clients. By leveraging Standard Chartered’s established custody infrastructure, we ensure the highest standards of security and compliance, further strengthening trust in the digital asset ecosystem.”
The collateral mirroring programme has launched a pilot under the regulatory framework of Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). It addresses counterparty risk—a key challenge in today’s digital asset markets—by offering users stronger protection. Standard Chartered acts as an independent custodian within the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), regulated by the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), and is responsible for the secure storage of collateral. OKX manages the collateral and executes trades through its VARA-licensed entity. Franklin Templeton will be among the first money market funds offered through this joint initiative between OKX and Standard Chartered.
Hong Fang, President of OKX, said: “As the digital asset ecosystem increasingly converges with traditional finance, we are committed to driving industry growth with maximum capital efficiency while safeguarding user assets. This partnership combines Standard Chartered’s strengths as a top-tier global custodian with OKX’s market leadership in cryptocurrency trading, setting a new industry benchmark for existing and prospective institutional clients and creating a trusted environment for deploying trading capital at scale.”
Franklin Templeton is a recognized leader in tokenization and real-world assets (RWA), consistently innovating through blockchain technology to deliver cutting-edge solutions for its users and clients. Through this collaboration, OKX users will gain direct access to on-chain assets developed by Franklin Templeton’s digital assets team, seamlessly integrating them into their financial and operational systems.
Roger Baysto, Head of Digital Assets at Franklin Templeton, said: “Our platform leverages blockchain technology to support the ongoing evolution of the financial ecosystem. Whether it’s direct investment in blockchain assets or internal innovation, we remain committed to true on-chain operations—on-chain minting enables genuine ownership and ensures transfers and settlements occur at blockchain speed, breaking free from the constraints of traditional infrastructure.”
Brevan Howard Digital, the digital currency and digital assets subsidiary of Brevan Howard—one of the world’s leading alternative investment management firms—is among the first institutions to join this innovative programme, highlighting the importance of such services being delivered through a collaboration between a globally recognized cross-border bank and a top-tier exchange.
Ryan Taylor, Group Chief Compliance Officer at Brevan Howard and Chief Administrative Officer at Brevan Howard Digital, said: “This programme exemplifies the industry’s ongoing innovation and institutionalization. As significant investors in digital assets, we are pleased to partner with leading institutions to advance the growth and development of the global digital asset ecosystem.”
