The highly anticipated AI赛道 star project, Sahara AI, has officially launched its first phase testnet — the Data Services Platform — selecting over 10,000 early contributors from 780,000 applicants. The whitelist competition was intense. Why did Sahara AI secure a total of $43 million in funding led by Polychain, Binance Labs, and Pantera Capital? Today, let's explore what sets Sahara AI apart.
1. What is the mission of Sahara AI?
Sahara AI is a decentralized AI blockchain platform that aims to transform how AI assets—including AI models, datasets, and intelligent agents—are developed, deployed, and monetized—through its pioneering concept of AI assets and proprietary infrastructure. Whether you're a professional developer, entrepreneur, or simply an AI enthusiast, you can easily build or deploy personalized AI products on the Sahara AI platform, while earning tangible rewards by contributing data, developing models, or deploying AI assets.
This unique design not only lowers the barrier to entry for AI but also fosters a more democratized and equitable collaborative AI ecosystem, enabling every participant to share in the industry’s growth.
In short, Sahara AI is a public blockchain designed for "AI development" and the "tokenization of AI data/models," allowing users from day one to co-create infrastructure through data labeling and receive real value in return.
2. Why is Sahara AI important?
Traditionally, opportunities to influence AI development have been limited to developers. With Sahara AI, however, anyone can participate and directly shape the AI ecosystem, helping build a fairer, user-centric next-generation AI.
As AI technology advances, the complexity of its data requirements grows accordingly. Tasks that once involved simple object tagging or basic classification have evolved into nuanced processes such as sentiment annotation, multimodal data alignment, and curation of domain-specific datasets. These tasks require thoughtful judgment, expertise, and precision to ensure high-quality outputs. Sahara AI’s Data Services Platform addresses these challenges by leveraging a global, decentralized network of annotators. By contributing knowledge, users help lay the foundation for a fairer, user-driven AI ecosystem—and are rewarded in the process.
Developers can access trusted models and datasets via Sahara AI, annotate and optimize datasets to accelerate development, and ensure high-quality data inputs.
3. Team Members
The core team behind Sahara AI consists of seasoned experts from the AI and Web3 industries, with prior experience at Stanford University, USC, UC Berkeley, AI2, Microsoft, Binance, Stability AI, Google, Protocol Labs, and Avalanche. The team brings deep cross-domain expertise into the design and development of Sahara AI, establishing a solid technical and strategic foundation.
Founding team includes:
-
Sean Ren (@xiangrenNLP): Professor of AI and Viterbi Chair at the University of Southern California, with strong academic credentials and extensive research experience in AI.
-
Tyler Zhou (@tz_sahara): Former Investment Director at Binance Labs, with deep understanding and insights into blockchain ecosystems and Web3 investments.
4. Partners
Sahara AI has not only received institutional backing but also guidance and support from leading figures in the AI industry and academia, including Laksh Vaaman Sehgal, Vice Chairman of Motherson Group; Rohan Taori, scientist at Anthropic (developer of the Claude large language model); Teknium, Co-Founder of Nous Research; Vipul Prakash, CEO of Together AI; and Elvis Zhang, founding member of Midjourney.
5. Funding Overview
In 2024, Sahara AI raised $43 million in funding led by Pantera Capital, Binance Labs, and Polychain Capital, with participation from corporate strategic investors including Samsung and Siam Commercial Bank of Thailand.

6. How to Participate
Sahara currently rewards testnet participants with Sahara Points (SP). The mainnet is expected to launch in Q3 2025, leaving ample time to accumulate points.
Step 1: Join the waitlist
Season 1 is now live. Whitelisted users can begin tasks immediately. Those without a whitelist can register right away.

Step 2: Choose a task
After obtaining whitelist access, go to https://app.saharalabs.ai
Select tasks aligned with your interests and expertise, exploring data tasks across industries such as creator economy, gaming, science, and trade.

Step 3: Apply for a task
Each task listing provides a comprehensive overview, including a clear description of the work, reward amount, and estimated difficulty level. Some tasks require passing a brief qualification quiz tailored to the specific task, ensuring contributors possess the necessary expertise and guaranteeing high standards across all submissions. Each quiz allows only one attempt—failure results in disqualification. This reflects Sahara AI’s strict emphasis on data quality, demonstrating their commitment to meaningful contributions rather than chasing trends or collecting low-value data. Currently, over 35 innovative tech companies and research institutions are already using Sahara AI, including Microsoft, Amazon, MIT, Motherson Group, and Snapchat.

Step 4: Contribute knowledge
Label, annotate, or review data. Your contributions directly enhance the quality and reliability of datasets, helping build smarter AI systems. For example, when completing a task about DeFi Influencers, I submitted Twitter handles, reasons for recommendation, and representative tweets. If my recommended influencers match others’, the reward will be split proportionally. This mechanism incentivizes users to provide unique, high-quality data.

Step 5: Earn Sahara Points and achievements
Complete tasks to earn Sahara Points, with additional bonuses for high-quality contributions. Points and achievements are calculated automatically using the platform’s advanced quality assurance system.
Strategy:
Provide accurate, high-quality answers to earn base + bonus points. Aim for the top 1,000 on the leaderboard by accumulating as much XP as possible—these users will receive special benefits. Users repeatedly submitting low-quality work will gradually lose access to prevent undermining high-performing contributors. The minimum accuracy threshold for task submission is 15%. If 4 of your most recent 10 submissions are rejected, you’ll face a 7-day suspension. Three suspensions within 3 months result in permanent disqualification.
Check in consecutively for 31 days to receive an NFT commemorating your contribution after Season 1 ends.
6. Summary
The value of AI data annotation lies in providing precise training data—a key factor in improving the accuracy and performance of AI models. Accurate labeling enables models to better understand and process information, resulting in superior real-world performance. This is precisely the core focus of Sahara AI. The team has indicated that as Sahara AI continues to evolve, more products enabling broad public participation will be introduced.
Clearly, this is a community-friendly AI project with genuine utility—one worth watching closely.
